Pics of my new Sharps!

Post by Grizzly Adams »

Well, it is a Sharps! :D This is my new to me original Sharps Pepperbox pistol. Caliber 22 short, model 1A, so it's been around a while. :shock

The 22 shells shown are old BP 22 short rounds.

My gunsmith went through it and tightened her up a bit. We test fired it with 22 CB caps and it shoots fine. What a hoot!

We also fired one of the old BP rounds. Wow! Much more bang than a fella would have thought. They made some serious stuff back in the day!

Now that's just plain cool! Love the grips. What do you figure the date of manufacture to be?

Good question, don Tomas. I have researched it, and it is an early model 1A, but there does not seem to be any way to put serial number with a date of birth for the Sharps pepperbox. My guess is 1860-65? :?

Very cool. Yours is very nice shape. Usually the gutta-percha grips are chipped up or just plain busted up. -------Those .22 BP rounds ARE a lot of fun to shoot. I've let loose a mess of them. Did 'ya ever notice, most original .22 BP rounds still work? Funny thing, I rarely get misfires with original BP rounds----------Sixgun

Way cool! All it needs now is a folding rear sight and it's a REAL Sharps!

This was my first experience with them. I was surprised that they went off at all! Pretty stout little critters!

The pistol has been carried a bunch. It is, as they say, worn smooth by the hands of time. That, and mostly right handed users, judging by the wear patterns. :)

I dropped it into my vest pocket the other day, and wondered how many times it had ridden in some fellas pocket, and what it has seen. Heck, that's what old guns are about.

What pray made you go for one of these? This piece is for the connoisseur so what led you down this path?

That's just awesome!

:D
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

It isn't a "pepperbox". A pepperbox has a number of barrels that rotate under a single hammer/firing pin. The Sharps is a multi barrel Derringer. The barrels don't rotate, the firing pin moves.

Sorry to be pedantic..but words do matter.

I have an addiction for old guns, mostly Winchesters. :) A buddy of mine has one of these little Sharps, and we spent an afternoon shooting it. I was hooked! :D Had to have one. Spent a long time looking for one of the copies to no avail, before I finally wake up to the fact that I could have an original. Now I am looking for one in 32! :)

My Grandfather had one of those. I was hoping to find it after he passed away. I'm sure he sold it when they started to appreciate. Did get a bunch of good stuff. But there were a few I'd seen over the years that probably got traded off. There was a nickle plated stag gripped SAA that dissapeared too.

I'm sure he carried it around with him. Way before we had CCW permits.

Yep, carrying a pistol in your pocket was just good judgment!
