Stolen firearms

I've been going thru some OLD files.

Back in July of '04 Geo. Madis had some firearms stolen.
Descriptions were posted here.
Does anyone know if any headway has been made in recovery of these items?

Well, 9 yrs. have passed since this notice was posted. Has the thief buried all his ill gotten gains? Or has he found some customers who didn't care if their "new treasures" were hot. Or, perhaps he considered his plunder an investment and is only waiting for it to "cool" off before he peddles to a new market.

Most likely, the thief sold them to folks that didn't know they were stolen, and being premium guns, would likely never be resold.

Likely stolen by someone who didn't know what they stole, sold to someone who didn't care they were stolen or know what they were, then resold again to someone who didn't know what they were either. Probably someone's hunting rifle, standing in a closet somewhere.

Also quite likely that many of the stolen guns were antiques, so no background check has ever needed to be done. Thus there's never been a way for them to be discovered during a check. I had a friend who had a pre 1898 Win. 1894 stolen from his vehicle years ago and the police said it would likely never be found since it didn't require a background check to purchase.

If you are a serious collector and own dozens, scores, or even hundreds of guns and many of them were bought u s e d at an f.f.l. then the chances are great that you possess one or more stolen guns.....In most states, F.F.L.'s are a safe and easy way for a thief or receiver to move a gun.....a false or stolen driving license is used during the green book log-in stage and there is absolutely no ncic serial number check at purchase in states that have no formal gun registration.....you buy it and y o u are checked but the gun is not.....

Here is another way you can come to own a "stolen" gun, even a new one that was never never actually stolen.....dyslexia, typos and simple keyboard mistakes when a missing or stolen gun is entered on ncic....

in the case of pawn shops that knowingly receive stolen goods....incomplete or transverse numbers are submitted to law enforcement......when even just two numbers are submitted crosswise then sooner or later some law abiding and honest gun buyer will wind-up with a gun with a serial number on ncic.....

George Madis... Not sure why I didn't put that together, I have a few of his books. I occasionally talk to his son over on Facebook.

Every post 1898 gun is supposed to be run through a check if sold by an FFL holder. That's federal law for FFL holders, and not state. I certainly had to when I had my FFL, even though private parties were allowed to buy/sell/trade without doing so. So these guns would either be antique, or sold between private individuals if they weren't checked as used guns.
