Do you name your guns?

Post by cutter »

I have four named at this time;

My AR is Vera, after a line from one of my favorite television shows.
My Marlin 1895 is Maralyn, after my inability to properly speak the English language.
And my two favorite carry pistols are known as " The Female Dogs" but not the polite version written here.

Anyone else?

I had my guide gun named but stopped it after some issues with whom it was named after. Don't know what I will name it now.

For whatever reason, I never named my guns, but I have named my truck. Meet Ol Blue. Image
The name doesn't fit the look of the truck, but since she has almost 280,000 mi, I thought it would be just fine. Crappy pic, but she's in the shop for some "cosmetic surgery" (cab corner, quarter pannel lip) right now and this is all I got.

My muzzleloaders: One is "Betsy" (I know, Crockett did it first but I still like the name) - she's a very long slender .45 and "Matilda" is a short .54 plains rifle. "Josefina" is my even shorter Rossi M92 16" Trapper.

That's one funny movie. Hope the AR lives up to the name. 8)

I think that approximately half the people that own Guide Guns call them "Thumper" and I am no exception. I have a .30-30 named "Maybelle" but the rest of my herd have no names as of yet.

Name your gun

Post by stormspotter »

To those few that know I carry, they just ask if "Little Brother" is around. It doesn't matter which one I might be CCW'ing.
Republic. I like the sound of the word. It means people can live free, go or come, buy or sell, be drunk or sober, however they choose. Some words give you a feeling. Republic is one of those words that makes me tight in the throat . . . . Some words can give you a feeling that makes your heart warm. Republic is one of those words.

The ones with personality are named but the others haven't been named yet.

My Trapper 45 Colt is Philadelphia (after Shirley Temple's character in "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon").

My Savage-Stephens 12 gauge with 18 inch barrels is Mean Elizabeth.

My Series 70 Commander is Ol' Bucketmouth.

Allen Martin is building me a Lehigh Valley smoothbore flintlock that I won't see for at least another couple of years but I've already named her Jenny Allison.

My Russian is often called" The Russian"

My newly aquired .50 ML will probably be labeled "The Beater"

The 9422 is called "The Winchester"

Man I suck at naming stuff. :P

Not so far.

I have contemplated calling my number 1 in 45-70 "Puff the Magic Dragon", after shooting some cowboy loads through it. The recoil was so light, it was like a puff on the shoulder, but I bet it would still get the job done. Also, it is such a potentially versatile gun, it could do most anything, and with BP, the cloud of smoke will help justify the Dragon part.

Just point, press the trigger, and "poof", things disappear!

take care,

Tom

To tell the truth, it never occurred to me to give names to my firearms. Might start, tho, with this suggestion. But this post reminds me of a writer, one Mickey Spillane,........who I'm sure you've heard of, whose private eye character Mike Hammer carried a 1911 .45 auto, & called it, "Baby". jd45

I used to, but I stopped, because I never refered to them by name, and I forgot which ones were which. There's a few names I can remember, but I no longer name guns (with one exception which I will hopefully pick up this spring).

Some of the ones I can remember:

Winchester 94AE Ranger - Lori (beautiful girl I used to have a crush on)
Marlin 336A - Michelle (Lori's beautiful friend)
NRM Colt 1991A1 GM - Summer (Dirk Pitt's love in Clive Cussler's books)
Springfield GI .45 - Velda (Mike Hammer's secretary)
Browning Hi-Power - Nicole (another beautiful girl I used to have a crush on)

I will hopefully be getting a Henry Big Boy this spring, which will be Jacqueline (my best friend (and beautiful, of course)).

Although none of the others are named, they do all talk to me. Is that bad???

I have yet to see fit to name any of my guns. Although both my .45 Colt SAs have "Griff" engraved on the backstraps. One or more of us will respond when my name is called... Which depends on the speaker's tone of voice!

I've always wanted one of those. Enfield = GOOD. 45-70 = GOOD. 45-70 Enfield = GREAT!

But my real question is: How did you get that possum to lay down next to your rifle???

You mean like an emergency word? That is a very good idea. The wife, my sis, and I have three emergency words.
The first word means; I'm in an uncomfortable position.
The second word means; I may be in danger.
The third word means; Kill everything you see

We have used one and two, almost three. Good idea.

I use three names and cover them all
Some go by the name MINE
Most go by the name DADS
And one shotgun goes by the name GRANDPAS

A few friends call my .44 marlin "the cannon" but I just stick with the three names.

My AR10T is known as Big Brother. Nothing like a .308 hole !
My Perazzi is known as Thor's Hammer- it just crushes clay birds like, well a hammer.

As for Hillary & Rosie( my skin is crawling) that reminds me of a college buddy that raised rabbits. He named his doe bunnies Hillary and Nancy, that way he could eat their kids( Dave was/is a bit 'off')

I had...HAD...a real P.O.S. Remington bolt, tube fed .22 that I bought new, and was made in 80ish that I called The P.O.S. Easily the worst quality and worst accuracy ever.

Also, a real Marlin 1895GS that I called Thumper. For good reason. I loaded some 405 CorLoks @ about 1900...WAY too much thump.

I carried an HK33 at work for 13 years he normally rode in my car with the pistol grip between the door post and a driver's seat he was called "Fritz". Then the agency I worked for decided we could only carry Colt AR's. That lasted 5 years and for the last 7 years, I carried an MP-5 in its place and a full auto L1A1 in the trunk for larger targets.

Do I name my guns ?

Not a one, since I got my first "gun" (a Daisy Red Ryder BB-gun in 1952).

Today, several hundred guns later, still no names...………….

Although, sometimes when I hunt deer out-of-state, I have a "Monday gun", a "Tuesday gun", a "Wednesday gun", etc., etc., etc., etc.

Usually just by their manufacturer or chambering. Sometimes I threaten to convene a meeting which will be attended by Mr. Ruger, Mr. Winchester and his son Mr. Rossi, and of course Mr. Marlin. Sometimes Mr. Bushmaster shows up, or Mr. Blackout, but if Mr. Mossberg has to attend, things might get ugly.
