Browning B-92/44 & 44 specials ?

Post by Lefty Dude »

I have a chance to buy a very nice B-92/44. I have a Rossi 92/44 that feeds 44 specials & 44 mags W/ semi-wad-cutters.

I know this has been discussed here before, Just can't remember the particulars.

How is the B-92/44 with the 44 specials ?

What say you B-92/44 users ?

Lefty Dude,

Everytime I went to buy .44 Specials, I could not justify the slight difference in price, versus .44 Magnum ammo. ...so, I have never tried the Specials in my B-92.

I do not know your plans, but keep that Rossi, even if you buy the Browning. I have been inside a few Rossi leverguns, and they are not much different than the B-92. I have had to slick-up my Browning, just like I had to slick-up the Rossis.

I know you are aware of this, why not just down load the mag. to special ballistics? Regards, 1886.

It all depends on the bullet you want to use. It will get along with something more pointy than it will with semi-wadcutters. I have used 429421 in the special case but it preferred crimping over the front band and even then it balked once in a while. So they are that picky about case, just the bullet you put in them.

Mine ran a couple of boxes of factory 44 Special just fine, but I load down the 44 mag now.

I shoot CAS/SASS and my main match revolvers are a pair of Colts in 44 special. My Lever gun is a Uberti 73 in 44-40.

I use my Rossi 92/44 for long range side match and shoot 44 mags. in a reduced configuration with Unique powder and a 240 gr. cast SWC.

The main use for the B-92 is a back up or replacement rifle for Uberti. By using the B-92 with 44 specials I can use the same rounds for both revolver & rifle. If I use the Rossi with both Mags & specials I will be cleaning the chamber ring frequently.

I thought of re-barreling the Uberti Carbine from 44-40 to 44 special. However My Custom Colts have 44-40 cylinders also.

I can get this B-92 for $400.00, so the price is right.

I have an option. Use the Rossi for the back-up as it feeds 44 specials. And use the B-92 for long range pistol caliber side matches with mags.
I have not used a B-92, just heard they are smoother and function better than a Rossi-clone.

Lefty,
You're hand loading so you shouldn't have too much trouble just loading the spec out a bit long like the 38 spec CAs shooters are doing. That should take care of it.

I had problems in 94 trapper...don't know about the B-92. However, to avoid the possible problems avoid SWCs in the specials and get as small a ogive as possible to still be safe in the lever. My Trapper's problem was the wider bullets and the SWC belts getting hung up at the breech.

Also, $400 is a steal. You should already own that gun.

Good luck.

My B92 will feed 44 specials just fine, to include the 250 KT bullet. That bukket is too long when loaded in a 44 mag. However, the accuracy with the 44 special 250 KT load has been poor at best. I am carrying it to the range this morning for further testing.
