Who imported 1886 clones?

Post by hemiallen »

I came across a gunstore that had a very nice looking octagon barreled rifle w/ case color action/ octagon barrel in I believe 40-90. All I can remember for the name was I had heard it long ago, but it didn't have any import indicating a Italian import.

Anyone have any idea's on what brand it was? I would remember it if I saw it, but searching 1886 clones, etc I didn't get much, not even pedrosoli.... Tough to find out from seller...long story.

Was an excellent shape gun, asking under $700, which seems pretty decent compared to new mfg reproductions.

Thanks for any help

There were some non-cataloged offerings of the Miroku 1886s that had a case colored action. The only caliber offered with case colors (as far as I know) was the 45-70. It is possible that there was a limited run of 45-90s but I never heard of them. In any case, no Miroku (Browning and then USRAC) made any other caliber than a 45, either -70 or -90. No 40 cals were made. Also, all of these will be nearly twice what you saw for price. A 1886 Miroku for $700 would be either a grave pricing mistake on the sellers part or a very ragged out rifle.

Are you sure that you were no looking at an 1876 replica? They were made in 40-60 and they came with case color. That is about the correct price range for a Chaparrel manufactured copy. If it is beware, there is no longer any factory support or warranty service for those rifles anymore.

In 2006 I bought two NIB Miroku 1886 ELs for $599 each from CDNN. It is possible that someone has one remaining and hasn't marked it up to the sky like most dealers seem to do.

Thank you very much.
Yes, it is a chaparral, and I found this from searching that name:

The 1876 is chambered for three of the original rifle’s cartridges: the .45-75, the .45-60, and the .40-60 WCF cartridges. The rifle that I was expecting to arrive was a .45-60, so I had prepared cartridge cases by cutting down .45-70 cases to the proper length, and loaded up a quantity of ammo for the tests using 300 grain cast lead Magnus bullets. The gun that I received is chambered for the .40-60 cartridge, so I had to hastily prepare some ammo for that, as I had neither loaded or ordered any ammo of that type.

I also see it has a fake wood finish, at least on the fancy grade one Jeff Quinn made the article around in the above copy-paste.

That's too bad they are inexpensive value and fake wood finish, seemed like a steal for an old winchester clone.

BTW, this one didn't seem to have the fancy wood/ fake finish. Anyone know if the less than fancy wood guns were real wood or a photo-type finish like Jeff Quinn's gun? And how is the quality of the firearm itself? Curious if it is a good Italian made gun or garbage...

Thank you very much

Hi Allen,
Some folks got good ones but several folks got bad ones. A big clue is none of the top Cowboy gun imports carry these guns. The Chaparrel is not suported here as far as I know. You may want to look at getting one of thec Uberti made 76's. The QC is much more consistant.
