357mag...125gr JSP...Levergun

Post by meanc »

Just got finished looking at Hodgdon's reloading website for the 357mag and see they now have rifle data and loadings for it.

It's pretty eye opening.

For 125gr they list a max charge of H110 as 22gr and velocity @ 2275fps and 41,400 CUP
For 110gr they list 23gr @ 2400fps and 37,200 CUP.

Who here has chrono'd a 357mag with either the 110gr or 125gr JHP/JSP and max loads of H110 or 296 out of their levergun?

Has anyone used it? On what? What were the results? Accuracy?
...and I don't think he even knows it...Walks around with a half-assed grin...If he feels fear, he don't show it. Just rides into hell and back again.

I don't shoot anything that light but I did chrono my 158grn .357mag loads in a 24" Rossi.

Weapon: 24" Rossi - 357mag
Ammo: 158g Zero JSP bullet, 16.5grn H110, Win SPM primers, assorted cases, 1.590" OAL
Weather: Sunny and 78°, light breeze,
Range El: 6,100ft ASL.

Results:
Shot - 1 1,810
Shot - 2 1,817
Shot - 3 1,825
Shot - 4 1,814
Shot - 5 1,831
Shot - 6 1,812
Shot - 7 1,823
Shot - 8 1,827
Shot - 9 1,822
Shot-10 1,836

Average: 1,822 - These were not fire breathing loads but rather just a respectable .357Mag load that you can use in any pistol.
One of these days, I'll have to load up some kickass rifle versions and see they do.

STD Dev.: 8.46 - I'm very pleased with the standard deviation of my loads. That's why they are so accurate!

With factory Remington, 125 grain JSP out of a carbine, I get around 2100 f/s.

ALMOST ANY FACTORY 357-125gr LOADS WILL CLOCK 2100-2200FPS FROM MOST 357 CARBINES. NO BIG DEAL. THE RUB IS THOSE 125gr BULLETS WERE MEANT TO EXPAND READILY AT 1400FPS; AT THAT 2100-2200FPS THEY PRETTY WELL DISINTIGRATE WHEN THEY RUN INTO ANYTHING HARDER THAN WUSSYPILLOWS.
FOR PROPELLENTS H110 AND W-W296 IS NOT--NOT!!--THE FOOMFODDER OF CHOICE AS IT IS FAR TOO SLOW IN THE 357 FOR SUCH LIGHT PROJECTILES. A PRESSURE OF 41400CUP IS WAY OUTTA LINE TOO FOR THE 357MAG IN MY NEVER MOST HUMBLE OF OPINIONS. FOR ANTI PERSONNEL WORK WITH MY 357MAG RIFLE OR CARBINES I WILL NOT GO LIGHTER THAN 140gr JHP BULLETS, AND THERE ARE NONE I HAVE NOT TESTED.

Terry, what is your powder of choice for the 357 mag in a carbine? I like the 158 JSP for my carbine, I think it's a good combo of weight and speed. But I've never used it for any serious work.

I LIKE 2400 FOR THE 357MAG WITH EVERY BULLET WEIGHT IN PISTOLS, RIFLES, OR CARBINES. THE CLASSIC PROPELLENT, FOR FACTORY LOADS OR HANDLOADS, FOR THE 357MAG HAS BEEN 2400 FOR THE PAST 74 YEARS AND IT WORKS GREAT WITH ALL BULLET WEIGHTS.
WITH THIS NOTED LET ME ADD THAT H110 AND W-W296 WORK JUST FINE WITH THE 158gr OR HEAVIER BULLETS. GIVEN MY DRUTHERS I WOULD STICK WITH THE 158gr BULLETS AS BY FAR THE BEST ALL AROUND BULLET WEIGHT IN RIFLES OR CARBINES. FOR HUNTING THOUGH THE 180gr BULLETS DO PERFORM VERY WELL AND ONE MUST GIVE THEM DUE CONSIDERATION. I AM A BIT PREDJUDICED AGAINST THE 180gr BULLETS AS IN MY THREE CARBINES AND ONE RIFLE I HAVE TO MAKE LARGE SIGHT ADJUSTMENTS TO SIGHT IN THE 180gr BULLETS, WHEREAS THE 125, 140, AND 158gr BULLETS ALL SHOOT TO DARN NEAR THE SAME PLACE IN ALL FOUR GUNS [ THIS IS PROBABLY SHIQLUCK...] . AND THEN THERE IS THE W-W 145gr SILVERTIP THAT SHOOTS WAY THE AITCH OFF TO THE LEFT IN MY 357 RIFLE, A UBERTI 24" '73.
AND SO IT GOES...

When I tested the 125gr. in my Marlin cowboy 24" they shot very accurate but impact almost 3' higher than the 158 at 100yd.
The 158`s are hard to beat IMHO. :D

I shoot Zero 158grn JSP in both 38spl+P loads too. I like the performance of the bullet over the lighter ones as I feel that the heavier bullets carry better because of their higher BC (however mediocre it is in a pistol bullet). Anyway, here are the chrono results of a 38spl load I use exclusively in my 24" Rossi I made up using H110 powder. I wouldn't recommend them for any 38spl pistol. I'm using H110 in this too because I've got a lot of it and I don't feel like stocking yet another powder as I already have 8 different powders.

Weapon: 24" Rossi - 38spl+P
Ammo: 158g Zero JSP bullet, 11.5grn H110, Win SPM primers, assorted cases, 1.460" OAL
Weather: Sunny and 80°, light breeze,
Range El: 6,100ft ASL.

Results:
Shot - 1 1,358
Shot - 2 1,349
Shot - 3 1,368
Shot - 4 1,349
Shot - 5 1,376
Shot - 6 1,356
Shot - 7 1,354
Shot - 8 1,345
Shot - 9 1,354
Shot-10 1,344

Average: 1,356 - These were not fire breathing loads but rather just a warm 38spl+P load using slower burning powder suitable for a lever gun.

STD Dev.: 10.04 - I'm very pleased with the standard deviation of my loads. These are just as accurate as my 357 loads above.

THESE RESULTS ARE EXTREMELY INTERESTING !!! THE BIGGEST SURPRISE IS THE USE OF THE WSPMAG PRIMERS IN A 38SPL CASE. THEY ARE BY FAR THE HOTTEST OF ANY SMALL PISTOL PRIMERS OF WHICH I AM AWARE. WHODA THUNK IT AND LOOK AT THE CONSISTENTSY OF THE WHOLE PACKAGE IN A 24" RIFLE. I AM IMPRESSED !!!

The best thing about these loads are that there isn't any sign of overpressure in my 38spl cases nor any sign of primer flattening at all (which surprised me). I started loading them at the normal Cowboy Action Shooter's recommended 1.500" OAL to ensure good feeding in my levergun and the std dev was terrible!! How about 114.7 for the exact same load and crimp?

So then I started shortening the rounds in .010" increments and watched the std dev get better with every batch till I settled on the 1.460" group when I hit a std dev of 10. In addition, each batch was tested for feeding ease and my Rossi loved all the lengths. I'd be interested in shooting my loads in a 20" and 16" Rossi to see what the performance in those shorter barrels is but unfortunately, at this juncture I can't justify a carbine and trapper rifle.

I'm big on magnum primers and ball powder (except with TiteGroup) as I've found that they are great at fully igniting the powder and lowering the Std Devs. I learned some interesting lessons when developing my 'nuclear' loads for my custom 6" Glock 10MM. How getting the powder to burn hot and build up the pressure before bullet release results in more complete and even combustion.

BTW, 'nuclear' meaning 165grn Speer Gold Dots @ 1,503fps out of a 6" barrel with only a slight bit of primer flattening.

Definately sounds like a nice load for a coyote!

TERRY M,
MAYBE NOT ALL 125 JSP ARE THE SAME.
WITH MY 92 .357 WITH 20 INCH BARREL, I PLACED A 125 JSP INTO THE LEFT EYE OF A 200 POUND SOW AT A DISTANCE OF 5 YARDS. I FOUND THE BULLET MONTHS LATER AT DINNER WHEN EATING MEAT FROM THE RIGHT SHOULDER. THE BULLET WAS NOT LIKE NEW, BUT IT WAS STILL RECOGNIZABLE.

BTW, that was my first feral hog with that rifle and I no longer use such delicate bullets on hogs.
