Yep, it's a big'un that ol' 50-140

Post by Wind »

Hey all - Shot against a guy shooting a 50-140 last weekend. He bought a set of my shooting sticks and asked if I could make a pivot pin out of one of his empties. For those of you that haven't rubbed up against a cartridge of this caliber, I thought I'd post a picture of one before I cut it up. It's standing there with one of my 45-70's. Best regards... Wind

Uhhh, am I supposed to shoot it or smoke it? I don't think I'd be good for more than 2 or 3 of those in one day.

Too bad there is not a lever action big enough for one of those! Guess I'll have to 'make due' with a 50 alaskan or 50-110.

Madman......I believe C. Sharps still makes the 50-140. Shiloh makes the original "Big Fifty" caliber of 50-90. Your looking at about 1800.00 minimum to get into one, and probably a good wait. Both would be a treasure to have. I would consider the recoil before I bought one of the big fifties, if I intended to shoot it much. I want a Shiloh in 45/70 as I just love my one functioning retina! .

I had Pac Nor build one on a #3 Ruger action about 7 years ago. This was before Rich had his stroke. Not terribly expensive. SSK will do one for you as well. A .45-70 #1 or #3 will easily handle that case. If I remember correctly, a little extractor work and a little milling of the top of the bolt is really all that is required to accept the larger O.D. of the rim. A .510 groove dia. barrel and you are in business. A THICK Kick-Ezz pad and a couple of mercury tubes in the butt would not hurt. BIG Fun, 1886.

I'll bet that's one expensive pivot pin.

I think I could relate to the size better if you put a 22LR round next to it.

Back in the late 80's I decided to get a Shiloh Sharps for silhouette shooting. I wasn't sure what caliber I wanted. A friend offered to loan me his Farmingdale Shiloh #3 in .50-140 along with a box of ammo to see if it might be what I wanted. The load was 130 grains of black powder under a 650 grain bullet.
I fired (offhand) thirteen rounds, and at every shot my hat would fall off and my shooting glasses fell down on my nose! After that many times picking up my hat and readjusting my glasses, I realized that I really wasn't having much fun! No way could I complete a forty round match with that thing.

I finally settled on a Montana Roughrider in .45-2 & 6/10 (.45-100). It is a fine rifle and I still have it, but as I got older, something smaller yet was needed. A Browning BPCR in .40-65 is taking over this year.

Or you can find an old howitzer and just have your smith rebore it and expand it for this cartridge

I picked one up a couple of years ago , to go along with the 8 bore, it weighs in at 14lbs. favorite load is a duplex of FFG and a smokeless. smokeless is only 5 grains but t black is 120, have a mould that throws a 700 grain slug that looks like a WFN style . Have taken one black bear wih it , at just around 82 yards , typical responce bang flop.

I was wondering if the wheeled carriage and ammo bearers are included in the price?

Now that would make them Pro's in Africa set up and take notice of good old USA single shot buff guns.

Well... since a 1lb of powder is 7,000 grains... Oh heck... I need my scale here to determine how many grains by weight there are in 140 grains by volume. I'll just say it's a tad less than ¾ of what I get outta a pound for my .40-90SBN, and it eats thru a pound of powder rather rapidly!

I have a 50-90SS on a Remington Rolling block that is a great shooter. With the 26" barrel it's actually pretty handy in the woods. I may carry it in the Sept. black bear season. The recoil isn't bad, but an extended session becomes very uncomfortable. The 50-140 is even bigger!
