You guys are not too close. Although he did slaughter quite a few people and bears.

This pic was taken about the late 1800's tho the rifle will give away the most likely year.

John "Liver Eating" Johnston/Garrison.

Hee Hee !!! Didn't even have to think about it.

We watched the movie last month and my wife wanted to know more about him, and that's the picture she saw.

Here's the website in our favorites.

One out of three aint that good Jerry. But you did good on recognizing him.

It was written that he ate a lot of Crow liver. Not sure of the veracity of that statement.

I am assuming that bear is being held fast by a trap. He does look awfully comfortable though. The old dude is sporting an 86. The Discovery Channel had a little blurb on Liver Eatin' Johnson on the old west series hosted by the Carradine brothers. 1886.

That is John Garrison AKA, John "Dapiek Absaroka" (crow killer) Johnston.

According to Army records he was 5'11&3/4" tall 200+lbs.

Picture was taken when he was town marshall in red lodge and he is holding a model 1876 winchester,

John Johnson, or Johnston. Depends who is telling the story. Not Jeramiah. That was for the movies. Liver Eater. So the story goes. Check out the book Crow Killer by Raymond W Thorp, and Robert Bunker. It is a great read. According to the book he was 6' 4", and weighted 250 pounds. I suppose that would be hard to verify. I doubt there was too many scales in the Rocky Mountains in that time frame. The pic was taken in Montana while he was a sheriff in his later days. He ended up in a V.A. hospital in Los Angles and was buried there. I think it was in the 1970's he was moved to Montana. Robert Redturd was reported to be a pall bearer. That is a dang shame for a Hollyweird socialist like him to be carrying a great American like Mr. Johnson.

According to the December 1957 issue of Guns magazine,Devil Anse Hatfield carried a 1893 Marlin in 35-55.I also have a special black powder Guns and Ammo from 1973 with an article by Elmer Keith about Sharps rifles that tells about the episode where Johnson ate the liver because they were out of meat and had been pinned down in buffalo wallows for three days.He was using a Sharps 44-77-470.But Elmer says it was Sioux liver. It's funny how a story can change with each teller  .

The life Liver-eatin lead was hard, to say the least! but as you read the book his killin was NEVER with out justification the fight was always brought to him and he answered.

my favorite phrase in the book is. " I was married once and I sendt her to Rome. OOOhh the female said I love Rome, Paris in the fall! NO he said (I sendt her to roam on the prairie!!!

love that book!

I'm still trying to figure out how to swing a 50 foot whip, or was it 75? I need to read that again. The red.. umm.. persons... , as he calls them, are either Flathead, or Soux depending on the version. I'd say flathead is probly accurate.

"Johnston... Yorn gonna' make me ill... Iffen you et that!"

Johnston married into the Flathead tribe. His wife was killed by a Crow hunting/raiding party. At that time he went to hunting down the fellows that had done it. He was fairly thorough.
