Estate Gun Value Help Please, Pic Heavy

Post by CBinNH »

A family friend has the sad duty of settling her late brothers estate. She is aware of my fondness of firearms & asked if I could give her any help. Rainy day yesterday made my pic quality dark. I have done some research on auction sites & the internet but a few of them I am not sure about. Any help appreciated.First up is a Win 1894 made in 1902 in 38-55 caliber. 26" octagon barrel, cresent butt plate. Blue is pretty much gone on the receiver, but the barrel & mag tube have 80% +. The bore looks good to me, no pitting, strong rifling. I sold a similar one 2 years back. The problem is that the butt stock has a large chip missing at the tang & does not fit well in tang area. The 2 tang screws are not correct. She found a tang sight that has holes that line up. Has a "D" marking on its underside. I wonder if the proper screws were lost & using the wrong ones has caused the fit/chip issues.

Next is a Metropolitan SxS damascus steel barreled shotgun. 12 gauge I think. I was able to find that it was probably made by the Cresent Firearms Co. They made "hardware store" shotguns under a variety of names. It is ornately engraved & has some interesting stock carving. It appears in good shape.

Next is a Ithaca Hammerless. Looks to be 12 gauge. Smokeless Steel marked. Well used. Still has 75% bluing on barrels, little on the receiver. Has a hunter engraving on receiver.

Next a flintlock pistol. Maybe Italian writing?

And finally, a brass powder flask marked JW Hawksley Sheffield ? on the spout.

She knows that I am not an appraiser. She also doesn't think these warrant paying for one. Thanks for any input. Chris

Wish I could help you more, but will let our Winchester experts chime in here. Very neat old guns. The pistol sure looks 1700's to me, unless it's a good fake. I've never seen a grooved frizzen like that one. Americanlongrifles.com might be a good place to look for knowledgable folks who can tell you more about the pistol. I'll see who I can find over there....incredible knowledge base there.

I'd get them appraised and put up on gunbroker. Not hard to do - and will most likely return the highest prices.

I've used these guys: http://www.whatsitworthtoyou.com/ They care as accurate as can be expected without touching the item in question.

I've also taken guns to Rock Island Auctions over in Illannoy.

That Flinter looks most interesting/historical.

The Damascus is probably a $200 wall hanger unless there is some interesting provenance on the engravings.

I am far from being considered an expert on such things but that winchester would bring between $600 to $800 here and it would take a little time at that. I have no idea on the pistol. The flask looks like a shot flask and they aren't bringing very much at this time. I would agree about the damascus being a $200 wall hanger. The other shotgun would bring about the same here which is sad because they are a good shotgun.

Even though worn and I'm not sure about the possibility of the stocks being refinished, that Ithaca Double should bring well over 200 bucks, at least in the 400's range if not higher on the gun selling websites. That's just my guess and what I would expect to pay. The Ithaca is a fine gun, and not in the same price range as your run of the mill Stevens or Savage doubles that you find these days. Maybe our fine double shotgun guru, 86er has a better read on this.

The carving on the damascus gun makes it a little more unique. Might bring the price up to someone who's fancy is struck by it, but I would think the larger the audience looking at it the better chance that it might sell a little higher.

Thanks guys. So the flinter may have some value. I have found a little bit of info on the brass flask. G & J W Hawksley were flask makers in the mid to late 1800's in Sheffield, England.

That's the one I would focus on getting appraised. The rest can be "appraised" sufficiently by we blowhards.

FWIW, if you can take some Macro shots of the barrel stampings on the Hammer Double, 86er can give you the skinny on everything but the wood.

Have you gone to GunBroker and done a smart search in the closed auctions? This is a good way to see just how much people will actually pay for a certain gun. The seach goes back several months and if you just look at the ones that were actually bid on it will give you a real world view of just what the gun is worth.
As for the double, if it has Belgian proof marks the $200 price would be about right but if it's German or English it should bring more.
