405 Win Cast Load Suggestions

Post by CBinNH »

I just bought some 300gn gas checked cast bullets from Montana Bullet Works and was wondering if anyone has any load suggestions. I remember there were some on the old site but didn't copy them down (bonehead  ). I think someone had some 2400 loads. Any help appreciated. None in my load manuals. Thanks, Chris

I have a newer tang safety .405 and the following loads are super in my rifle. Mt. Baldy 350gr FNGC sized .414", CCI-300 primers, 54.5grs of H-4895, Hornady brass preped on Lyman dies. The M die measures .409". The bullet is seated to the crimp groove and I crimp heavily with a Lee FCD. Very accurate and very consistant. For a lighter load I use a 210gr BearCreek Supply semi wadcutter designed for the .41mag sized at .412". Hornady brass preped on Lyman dies, custom expander from Buffalo Arms sized at .411, 9grs Trail Boss and Rem 2 1/2 primers with a light crimp. This load is quiet and shoots to the same point of aim as the buster loads at 25yrds. N-310 would also be excellent for light loads but I can not get it unless I order from the supply houses. I hate HazMat fees so I use Trail boss. I have not seen data using 2400 but I think you can find more suitable powders. Just my opinion. Good Luck. 1886.

Thanks for sharing your experience 1886. I got some load info from the Hodgdon site now. Mt Baldy is only listing a 310 gn bullet currently. I was wondering about 2400 for mid-power loads. It seems to work in some other straight wall cases. Chris

The bullet in question is .416 bullet that Frank sized to .414" for me. If you are interested in this bullet ask him to size it to fit your rifle's bore. I had it sized to .414" at Frank's suggestion. He has some experience with the newer .405. Thanks. Good Luck with yours. 1886.

Don't go over 25 grs of 2400. I get about 1750 with that charge and the lyman bullet.
28 grs of 5744 has shown to be quite a bit more accurate in my rifle than 2400.
You can also try 35 grs of H 4895 .

You're welcome Chris. I went thru a bunch of powders, and alot of folks
's cast bullets over the last 5 years. For cast bullet shooting I just couldn't make any powder do a better job in accuracy than 5744. When you want to speed the thing up with jacketed, rx12 is the best, but it's no longer in production, good news is that rx15 does nearly as good.
