how low for .321 jacketed bullets

Post by FLINT »

I know that hornady and speer both make .321 jacketed bullets.

does anyone know what the lowest velocities either of these bullets will reliably expand at is??

I'm shooting for 1800 fps and am wondering if either of these would work well in deer at that low of a velocity.

I know that Hawk makes a .321 bullet that will probably expand at lower velocities, but they are painfully expensive.

I'm also thinking about lead, but I'll post questions about that later.

Thanks!

My Hornady 4th Ed. says "useful velocity" of 1900 to 2200 for the 170 gr.
Wonder what would happen if you drilled a small hollow point?

I e-mailed Hornady that same exact question about their 170gr.JFP.
Their response was that this bullet is designed to reliably expand between 1600-1700fps(impact velocity).

My ballistic calculator came up with the following figures based on a BC of 0.249 (from Hornady website):
start at 1700fps, your down to 1597 at 40 yds
start at 1800fps, 1706fps at 35yds and 1603 at 75yds
Start at 1900fps, 1707fps at 70yds and 1604 at 110yds
start at 2000fps, 1705fps at 105yds and 1602fps at 145yds

In each of those strike zones energy will also be around the 1000 FP mark, which most people seem to think is perfect for deer.

Load 'em up and post the pics

At what range will you be shooting? Impact velocity is what is relevant. 1886.
