"We the greedy" applies to anyone asking for & taking Tax Dollars for their own benefit.

From Welfare Wastrels to Farm & Corporate pigglets, THAT where the problem lies, NOT in businesses trying to earn a profit over the objections of the Unions.

Somehow the "Workers of the World" seem to forget that no profit = no jobs...

Unfortunately, none of the race to the bottom is new. Granted we have more obstacles to overcome to reach each of our own perception of the "brass ring". But, since the dawn of the industrial age this migration of "lower labor costs" has persisted.

Back in the panic of '73, yep 1873 most of the industrial world took a header and working men were thrown into the streets along with their families. Thanks to our ever expanding territory, we here in the USA had means to an end by utilizing the largest welfare hand out ever devised by a society before or since. 160 acres...yours for the taking. That soaked up a large segment of the working class. Those that stayed, found their wages cut in half even though they were the lowest in the industrial world. The USA was held in disdain by the workers in Europe, same as we look at Asia today. Which by the way, they were migrating here and driving the cost of labor down just as illegals do today. Difference being, our government put a 10 year sabatical on Asian immigration from 1882 to 1892.

From that point until WWII the USA had a standard of living that mirrors ours today when compared to other industrial nations. 'Bout tenth or twelfth... in that range. Except for the few decades after WWII we were fortunate to have a lock on the industrial world.

Update and caveat to the below...

Everything below is true if you are wolking in a greater metro/suburban area. You will probably work 10 - 12hrs a day, stop at 70-80 houses a day and make decent money with decent bennies (until Obamacare anyway).

But if you live in an area with extreme rural routes (300+mi/day on unimproved dirt roads) &/or have to commute more than a few minutes to get to the depot to get your truck... forget both sleep and making any money. (I average 13hrs/day "on duty" (DOT max is 14) and have an hour commute each way...I'm away from home 17+hrs a day, 5-6 days a week. The only time i get a decent night sleep is when I'm on an overnight at a motel and can trade commute time for extra sleep...) Getting a "good" route at a rural depot seems to be a matter of luck and timing as you only get what comes open and the good routes are hardly ever vacant.

But it's a decent gig in suburbia.
Old Ironsights wrote:I've sent this info privately to a couple of folks, but it should probably be listed here.

I was recently called by Schwans Corp to interview for a Route Sales Representative. I'm 95% sure I've got the job.

For those not familiar with Schwans, they are a Frozen Food home delivery service that started about 50 years ago delivering ice cream to rural Minnesota.

They now own Freschetta Pizza, among other lines.

Anyway, as an RSR you can make high 5, low 6 figure income just delivering frozen food to willing/active clients.

Honestly, it's not hard to pull in $45K+ ... though the hours are longinsh.

See if you have a Depot/Openings in your area.

Greetings everyone, it's been awhile.
I had open heart surgery three months. In my present job (Security Guard, 6 years in the Pacific Northwest weather) I was walking 8 - 12 miles daily up to the day I was placed on FMLA...I'm 58 y/o. I'm used to biking and walking every day but I'm thinking I need an inside job with some sit down time (This has been the only major surgery in my life and wish to operate with original equipment that the Good Lord issued me for as long as possible) out of the weather as I get older. Retiring is out of the question for all practical purposes.
I'm thinking of starting back to school between March 2014 and Jan 2015.
My job skill set is antiquated: 23 years in main fame computers and that was 12 years ago...I would have 35 years in with the same company today if I wasn't laid off due to my job being automated out of existence...life goes on, despite age discrimination. It appears to me the only jobs I'm fit for now are retail and security and it's a box I wish to break out of.
Thoughts, ideas, observations?
I live in the Seattle area and being on the road is not an option, I must remain close to this area to check on my wife for health reasons.

Sorry about needing jobs fellows.

JMHO

If you guys have a clean record, good with people, valid drivers license, car, valid car insurance check with your area State Agencies for the people with disabilities and look into doing "Home and Community" services for the disabled.

Unlike via doing class room education activities Home and Community services usually do not require a degree or a registered business ie license ?
Meaning you can with your car pick up and do home and community services with your home being your office. verify this?

You might take one, two, or even possibly three individuals as dependent on what you are doing for an allocated amount of time each week, or even every day etc.Maybe bowling, movies etc. they have their own money ahead of time. Also sometimes parents look to this for needed their time to just be by themselves for whatever reasons?
Activities could be taking them shopping for goods, spending time communicating even taking them to lunch, supervising their performance while they volunteer at some job maybe at a dog shelter, hospital doing errands, working at a 7/11 stocking shelves.

You would monitor them, take notes, compile results via a log.
Many places will hire a handicapped person requiring a little extra supervision and you would be that supervision.
I think the pay would probably be around $12-$15 an hour (per person)and you would set your own hours.
Would imagine your travel costs could also have some write off expenses.

This is becoming a common thing as people with disabilities the states want them not to be left out.

Again, check with your local run disability agencies about providing "home and community services for the disabled"
and what you need.

least with this it would be steady pay, flexible hours and now with Obama Care maybe medical insurance via income for you guys.

Good Luck!

This above is just a possibility and my suggestions might be off, so check for clarification for everything.
Again not for everyone but if you are a compassionate caring person wanting to help the disabled this might be a good job for you.

Also bubba15301,

is there any gas drilling jobs in those parts being maybe inspector, tank washers, watchman, possible water tank drivers if they train you??? Have a nephew working for gas company around New Kensington area I believe ????? Good pay!

Another possibility?
Guy I retired with got bored wanted to just do something, works for CVS delivering pharmacy prescriptions to people that can't go to CVS. Works I think 36 hrs a week and said he makes $12.11 an hour?
How bout getting a grocery delivery business to people that cannot make it to store?

Depends on the field of work, BLM well inspectors make 30 - 35 K a year. Private make 60 - 90K a year. Field service work pay for the .gov is very low and every time we change administration you could lose your job.

It is the one year anniversary of my not getting a paycheck, despite HAVING a job...65-70 hours a week, as a family physician. Nothing in the bank, savings gone. Not to the point of auction yet, but I feel your pain... :(

Hi,

I'm currently laid off. Right now, I am doing work for my friend remotely. He repairs appliances. I take all his calls and I do his scheduling. If you are looking for someone to do some admin work for you, or answers your phones for you, I will do it for a good price. I can also monitor your online review and correspondence with customer or potential leads. I can't guarantee it will last forever, but I can definitely do it for the next few months or more and weekends are almost guaranteed for the long run. However, if you do appliance repair in the market my friend does, then I would not be able to help you, as that would be a conflict of interest.

I have a bachelor's degree from a large university in DC. I have moved around a lot which is why I'm in limbo right now.

If you do something like electrical work, HVAC, contractor, plumbing, carpet cleaning, painting, car detailing, handyman, haircutting, work then I'm your guy.

I am very quick with learning new software but if you aren't currently using one and you're a one-man show - I can suggest a an online cloud software which two companies I have worked for used. It's great for cloud based invoicing, scheduling, and things like texting your customer when on the way.

I mean, hey, if I get enough jobs like this, then maybe I won't even bother looking for another job. I just need to make ends meet.

You can email me at freeplease @ gmail .com (that's an email I made in college - I don't want to put my regular email as it has identifying information. But if you email me, I will be sure to respond with my personal email.).

Thanks!
