375 Winchester Brass

Post by Jaeg »

Hi

Newbie to the forum with a question.

I have a 375 Big Bore and over here in Australia it's pretty hard to find Brass
and was wondering if any of you 375 Winchester owners trim 38-55 brass to
375 winchester length or does the 38-55 brass fit in the chamber with out trimming?

thanks

Regards, Jaeg

G'day mate,
try Rebel gunworks, (07) 33916744 in QLD they have Win 375 for $111.60 per 100.
No idea if anyone else has them for less, I just spotted their ad in the latest shooters journal

Greetings Jaeg,
My experience was that the shorter 2.075 38-55 brass worked. The original 2.12 stuff was a bit too long for my Win Big Bore. Left was fired in Big Bore, right in 1894 38-55. These are long brass cases untrimmed. The Big Bore fired case must have entered the throat to taper the way it did at the mouth probably raising pressure.

Welcome. Try the 2.080" length brass. The 2.215" will be too long. Regards, 1886.

Welcome! Don't forget you can also fireform 30-30 brass, though it usually ends up a bit shorter than spec.

When I had a .375 I used 30-30 brass for target and medium loads. Kept my .375 brass for the full hunting loads.
In 1988 I shot a 3 point bull Elk with my #3 Ruger in .375. Dropped him with one shot at 75 yards, it was a quartering shot and he was trotting. Blew his heart & lung out. I recovered the bullet in his chest, still have it. In the #3 single shot I could use spire tip bullets instead of the flat points. I used a 270 gr. .375 H & H jacketed round nose. The bullet did a perfect mushroom and now weighs a little over 170 grains.

For fun and plinking I had a round ball load with the 30-30 cases, used a .36 cal ball and Unique powder.

The .375 is a good cartridge, have fun.
