H.B. London on the shootings in Colorado...

Post by AmBraCol »

AN UNEXPLAINABLE TRAGEDY

Snow covers the ground here in Colorado Springs. It will probably snow again on Friday. It does look a lot like Christmas. Houses are lighted and our buildings are festive, but to be honest, in our town there is a sadness. Our community and state have been wounded by the senseless murder this past Sunday of two Youth With a Mission students in Arvada and two beautiful young ladies at New Life Church here in Colorado Springs. Their names are Tiffany and Philip, Stephanie and Rachel.

There was a fifth victim who lost his life in this tragedy. His name was Matthew. He killed the other four and then shot himself in the head. He was angry at Christians and evidently needed to get some revenge for allegedly being mistreated. Who knows why?

In a statement by Matthew's parents they wrote, "We are lost in grief as we prepare to bury our beloved son Matthew. We loved Matthew with all our hearts and we are groping for answers as we try in vain to understand the events of last Sunday."

Matthew's parents are not ordinary. His dad is a highly respected physician. The family is devoted to God. They are the kind of family any of us would like to have in our church. They had a troubled child — like many who are reading this.

I know there is a danger of using this unimaginable event to make a point, but, during the Advent Season, we have a myriad of opportunities to give those we love a little extra attention — to listen more carefully to what they are saying; to note any irregular behavior patterns; and to take a closer look at their friends and the influences in their lives, such as dress, the Internet, school and attitudes that might appear troubling. In other words, we need to be intentional as parents and grandparents.

The words from Matthew's parents haunt me: "We are groping to understand." Paul writes, "Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged" (Col. 3:20,21).

Parenting is not an easy assignment, but it is — next to your marriage — your most significant responsibility. Tell your kids you love them. Forgive them. Call them. Talk to them. Pray for them ... and be patient. "Point your kids in the right direction — and when they're old they won't be lost" (Prov. 22:6 The Message).

Perhaps that verse is much too simplistic, but it is a start! Please call your kids today and tell them you love them and value your role in their lives! And please pray for the families and churches affected by this unexplainable tragedy.

Be blessed and be a blessing. —HBL

Excellent post! None of these ever make sense, and there are too many victims - outside of the immediate event - than anyone ever knows...

I must disagree with the following statement:

"There was a fifth victim who lost his life in this tragedy. His name was Matthew. He killed the other four and then shot himself in the head."

He was a murderous rat-^%$&^%$, not a victim. Asserting that he was one of the victims in a mass killing of his own creation is at best the thinking of a pudding-brain.

His parents, however, I would agree were victimized by his actions.
