Twain's got some good quotes, but this is actually from a fictional character. Shucks, SURELY someone recognizes at least the author! I've read all the books he published under his name prior to his death. Last year I was given a book of poetry by the same author. Some good stuff in it too. Anyway, that quote's kind of stuck in my mind over the years, probably because I like to read and so can identify with the sentiment of the one speaking in regards to the disadvantage those who do NOT read have in life.

Sorry Paul, I just don't recognize it.
Sincerely,

Winston Churchill ?

I know one time he was arguing a point in Parliament and he quoted some statistics that were way out of line with what they should have been. After he was done one of his aides pointed out his error to him. He said yes I know they were wrong but by the time they figure that out it will be too late because they will have already voted. His side won.

Well, well, well....

Am I the only Louis L'Amour fan 'round here? He wrote it. IIRC it was Kerbouchard (sp?) in "The Walking Drum" who "said" it.

I thought it might be L'Amour, but I thought sure it was from one of his more traditional westerns.

The Walking Drum (seafaring in the spice-trade era), and Last of the Breed (cold-war-era thriller with kind of a 'Payback' theme) were two of his non-westerns that I really liked...

I could be wrong. I've only a half dozen or so of his books at hand down here. I've not read "The Walking Drum" in several years. I'm about 90% sure I'm right, but if someone finds the quote in another book, well please let me know!

I like his theme of "read and better yourself". It is something he did through life. His book "Education Of A Wandering Man" is an excellent read and gives great insight into his books. Last year a friend sent me "Smoke From This Altar" - his volume of poetry. Some of it's pretty good stuff.

L'Amour remains one of my all time favorite authors of fiction. Mark Twain, on the other hand, wrote some great non-fiction. I get a lot more out of "Life On The Mississippi" and "Roughing It" than I do out of his works of fiction.
