What year is my Trapper ??

Post by Bullard4075 »

I am trying to run down some scope bases.
Some charts mention 94AE BIG BORE ?? , 94 Angle-Eject (except earliest models).
I think the Big-bores were 307 and 356 cal weren't they ?
Is mine one of the "earliest models" ??
The 16" barrel marking says "Winchester MODEL94AE CAL. 44 REM. MAG
The serial number is 564992XX , can anyone tell me date of manufacture ?

I am trying to mount a SIGHTRON S33-4R red dot that requires a weaver type base.

PS . The owners manual (in 4 languages) is so generic as to be worthless. :( :(
At least English was the first language.

PPS Pictures coming shortly !!!

I can't find a copyright date anywhere on the manual Hobie.
However on the back bottom left corner it says Form No. ML-AE-90-10

Bullard,

The 94 Big Bore and the Trapper are two separate models. At least the early ones were.
At any rate, your Trapper will use the same scope mounts as the regular Mdl 94AE.

According to my Williams catalog the Front mount is a #21 and the Rear is a #22. I don't have a Weaver catalog.
Here is what the Weaver on line catalog ( http://www.weaver-mounts.com/charts/charts.aspx ) has to say:
> 94 Angle-Eject (except earliest models): Rear 95, Front 94,
>Grand Slam Dovetail Bases: 1-PC Base; 48944

The date on your manual is 1990. ( ML-AE-90-10 )

From your serial # it would be a 1991 vintage. Right around the time thay started adding a cross bolt safety.
Is yours free of the cross bolt safety?

This is a handy thing but unfortunately your serial no. looks to be outside their records (post 1982) :)

Since they never reach 56 million, you gotta have an extra "X" at the end of yer number.... 5,649,92X; and if so, that would make it... 1991.

But Joe is correct, your Trapper will take the same rear sight mount as a similarly dated 94AE of non-BigBore configuration.

Thanks all.
The correct serial number is 56492XX. 1990 or 1991 ...we will go with that.
It does NOT have a crossbolt safety.
Taking a chance (before I got your replies) I went with Weaver mounts #94 and 95.
Everything went together well.
Throwing it to my shoulder I mount slightly below the scope (red dot) , ie I have to lift my head a mite to sight through the scope. Of
course not having shot this combination yet I do not know if this is to be a problem.
If this is a problem I will be looking for a lace-on cheek-piece. IIRC I have somewhere seen a leather, lace-on cheekpiece
with cartridge loops on the other side.
As a temp solution -if needed- I can add some foam padding under the elastic cartridge carrier that is on it now. Kind of a red-neck solution
I know but it is easily adjusted and reversible.

I'm still working on the pictures.

I have a 94 close in ser #. Great gun - I love the action. I have been looking for a trapper of the same period.

I think maybe I'm learnin this picture stuff.
I'm not sure if this should be a separate post ....but here goes.

I added the sling, cartridge cuff and the Limbsaver recoil pad.
I am not happy with the receiver sight as my eyesight does not allow me to see the front sight
clearly.

This red dot sight is higher than I would like but maybe I will get use to it.

The peep's not the problem. All that's needed is a nice, bright, fibre-optic front sight.
They're available, from various makers, in either a coarse or fine bead - and in red or green color.

I didn't say that clearly enough.
The short sight radius (20 inches or so) makes the FRONT sight fuzzy.

See your eye doc. I have my prescription bifocals (lineless) set so that I can see the front sight plainly. Everything else is a blur, but that front sight is nice & crisp. Hasn't completely obliterated my shooting.
