Hey North East Hoosiers Get Together and Shoot

#1 Post by JReed » Thu Oct 09, 2008 9:28 pm

We need to find when we can all get together. There is a range here in Auburn that has a 100 yard line and is cheap. My only thing is that I only have Sundays off. I would like to do something before all the leaves are off the trees. My oldest son has a new to him .22 that he hasn't shot yet and I have a Stevens 200 that needs to be broke in. What do you all think can we make this work?

I'm for it if we can work out the sched. I have every other weekend off. Or even if we can find a central place just to meet and eat.

I wish I could be there. I was born and raised in Indiana. I miss fishing the farm ponds and the squirrel hunting.

I am 30 minutes norht of down town Ft Wayne in Auburn.

As I said I have most Sundays off start throwing out some dates and we will see what works for the group. For out of towners Bring a tent and you can camp out at my place I am on 2 acres so I have plenty of room just not much room in side the house.

P.S. Wives are welcome my wife would love the female company. :D

Well I can't make Nov 9th, I'll be working. Here's some dates that I will be off Oct 18th....I can't make Nov 2nd either have a previous....Nov 16th...Nov 30th that's Thanksgiving weekend so that's kinda of iffy....Dec 14th....the rest of December will be making family Holiday visits..........but you guys make the call, if I can be there I will.

My wife will definetly want to come, she's not much on shooting but she sure likes to visit and talk with other wives.

Also, if can get a definite date I will e-mail PPPastor Don, he's down Lafayette way he might like to join in.

Also AJMD429 is only couple of hours south in Indy...hope he's reading this.

I'm good any Nov date but the 23. That's the Anniversery and I had better be in attendence... :o

Of course, depending on the 4th, such a gettogether will either be considered a Party or an illegal gathering of potential terrorists.... :|

Well the time and place all depends. If you all want to come saturday evening campout ( if you have a camper there is room but no hook ups) have dinner do introductions and show and tell then we can get up sunday eat breakfast have coffee and head to the range. If the wives dont want to shoot they can hang out with my wife she would be more then happy to play hostess. Camping at my house aint really ruffing it I got hot showers and we can have a campfire any were on the property. Oh kids and grand kids are welcome to come also. My boys will be shooting their .22s they are 9 and 6 years old and if I can find the box with my ML stuff they will also be shooting their .32cal squirrel gun. I will find out more info about the range and see how much it will cost us.
If that is cool with you all that would be Sat Nov 15th meet at my place then head to the range on Sunday morning. If you cann't make it saturday afternoon/evening then we will just see you at the range.

I'm in for the 16th. Probably won't camp out, but that remains to be seen.

45-70, .357, .22 & Flinchrock.

BTW... that is probably a good day to be OUT of the woods.... that's Deer Opener for the Orange Army...

From DNR:
The Firearms Season is from the first Saturday after Veteran's Day, November 11, and runs for sixteen days.

I thought about driving up on both days since I'm only about an hour away, but that would be 4 hrs road time for 2 round trips. Better thought was since I no longer have a tent or a camper I think I will reserve my camp site at the Holiday Inn Express....they don't allow camp fires, but I can get by. Plan to bring my Marlin M9 9mm, the SKS, Marlin 39M, S+W M29, and the Ruger MK1 .22, and plenty of ammo for all of them.........looking forward to finally meeting some of you guys face to face. By the way the wife is looking forward to it also. My kids are grown and on their own, so will be just the 2 of us. Awaiting details.

Unless there is a problem with shooting steel, I'll bring my 10" Armorplate Gong.

Unless you borrow a Barrett from the Armory or swipe some 7.62 AP it should handle anything we have. ;)

Except for scheduled events, YOU MUST BE A MEMBER TO SHOOT AT OUR RANGE - STRICTLY ENFORCED!
I hope that their criteria for "Scheduled Events" isn't like the criteria at the club I tried to use for my aborted "event"... :?

FWIW, I hope to have a key to the Knox range by/after this Sunday's shoot...

Ok I just got off the phone with the Secretary Treasurer of the club he sounded receptive. I will meet a couple of the board members tomorrow night @ their Sunday night trap shoot to pitch it to them also I will go to the club meeting on Tuesday to talk to the whole board. Ron (the gent I talked to today) said he is selling memberships right now for 15 bucks. He also said if we can work this out we wont be able to shoot until after 1200 on sunday due to an agreement with the neighbors.

I will keep you all posted as I learn more.

Ok guys here's a possible alternative, if you are willing to drive to Huntington and things don't work out to go to Jeremy's place.. The J. Edward Roush Lake shooting range (260-468-2416). It is a public shooting range run by the DNR..open Tue-Sun 9am until 1 hour before dark depending on season. Cost $4.00 day per adult, $2.00 day for kids 16 and under. Has 18 positions 7, 15, 25 yds; 10 positions 50 yds; 5 positions 100 yds. 4 positios clay/shotgun bring your own thrower or rent one there. PAPER TARGETS ONLY, NO STEEL or POP CANS, or PEPPER POPPERS etc. No fully auto or rapid fire. Shooters under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. A range master is on duty and all commands MUST be followed. Directions 3 miles south of Huntington on SR 5 to Division road turn east about 1.5 miles to range at intersection of Division roads and CR 100 east.

Huntington has a Holiday Inn Express, Motel 8, and Vista motels. About the only good sit down restaurants are The Kings Garden (chinese) and Don Rafael's (mexican), the rest are the typical fast food joints. There are a couple of others but they don't rate high on my list as good eating places. But we are about 45 mins SW of Fort Wayne which has a good choice of eating places.

If you have tent or camper I, like JReed have 2 acres to park on but no hook ups. My back yard range is small but possible to get 100 yds out of it. The only problem would be each and every bullet would be PARAMOUNT to go into the bullet stop as the woods around is all government owned and they will be full of orange suits chasing deer.

Wives and kids welcome.

Let me know.......

That sounds like a better set up then the place up here by me. They dont have any benches and their back stop is rather small. Also the first thing they asked was how big of rifle would we be shooting.

The range in Knox has no restrictions except Full Auto.

It's a Sillhouette range so Steel is fine. No target stands available on site though. "Bring yer own".

There are measured berms at 25, 50, 75, 100, 150 & 200(m) with the line under Cover.

There is only one bench, but if anyone has a portable there is room.

It's also set up for "Off Ground" Prone (these Handgun Sillhouette shooters like to lay on their backs...)

We usually start Sunday shooting right at 9am, so no noon restrictions - and the scheduled events are done for the year, so we would be 100% open for the 16th.

Biggest drawback is... it's 6mi from Knox IN. . No Power (except portable generators) and one semi-nasty outhouse/porta-john. I think Knox has one hotel-ish place but I may have imagined it.

I think one night camping would be OK.

Knox works for me, it's not far from Plymouth so should be motels and eateries there. I have a portable shooting bench I will bring.

How about the others.........??????????

Not to step on our favorite Jarhead's OPORD...

The Knox (Starke County) Range is 83mi from Ft. Wayne. (see map in post above)

It's 37 mi from me.

Like I said, my biggest concern, especially if there are wimminfolk, is the outhouse.

I can bring my 800w generator.

One of the muckety mucks (Hi Steve... ) has a neat roller in 40-65, so if he's not hunting, I might get him to be a part of this if Sarge's place dumps and we think Knox is the best alternate option.

This is starting to sound like fun. Duh; when is shooting not fun??
Anyway, I want to be there. Gotta talk with Momma. She has been a bit on the down side for a while now. Who knows, she just might push me out the door to get rid of me for a while!

Will get back to y'all.

Well my work schedule strikes again I wasnt able to make it to the meeting tonight didnt get home until 8  83 miles is a long way that would make for a real early morning but I could do it if the wife lets me take her car (32MPG as opposed to the 16 in my truck) not enough room on the bike for guns and kids. If Knox works for you all I will make it work for me.

Are we definetly on for Nov. 16th at Knox....????

What time...???...0900 maybe...????

How about it Eric65, PPPastor Don, Ron Macy....are you all still in....????

JReed, if you want we could meet up and truck pool, I have a Chevy extended cab, plenty of room for 4, can share gas cost. Stuff, guns etc. would need to be in water proof containers in case of rain, as I have no cap or tonneau cover on my truck bed. We could meet at a place called Paige's Crossing on US30 just before you get to Columbia City they have large parking area......let me know.

By the way, my wife has bowed out since it's going to be just a shooting meet now.

I don't want to step on Jeremy's plan.

Knox is an alternate. It is a GO as an alternate, but only if that's OK with Jeremy.

The directions to the Knox range are posted on page 1 of this thread. It is the SAM Sillouhette Club on 200S between IN36 & IN39, just south of US 30.

But it's Jeremy's call.

My last Parade got rained out by Politics. I don't want to rain on Jeremy's.

OI Knox is fine with me.
After visiting the range here it is great for shotgun and taking your kids to shoot 22's but not the best for a bunch of folks with rifles. So Knox is cool with me if it is cool with the group. I just want to get together with everyone do some BS'ing and do a bit of shooting as a bonus. :)

Right then.

Knox it is.

I have a key to the property, and as long as we don't attract the attention of the Feds/Secret Service we can do pretty much anything but automatic fire.

Knox has a hotel... but I don't know anything about it.

I will plan on arriving Saturday afternoon & will camp out for a Sunday Shoot. Anyone wishing to camp should be advised the site is 98% primitive (there is an outhouse... ish...).

Assuming I can get it running properly, I will bring my little 800w generator & a tank of propane for my grill.

Knox is 6mi down the road (200-S).

PM me with your Cell # and I will add you to my "yes I will take your call" list and we can organize by phone if you get lost / have questions not germaine to Posting.

FWIW, Knox is on (will be on) CST. Most of y'all are on (will be on) EST. So you might get there "early"...
