WOW, an 1876 ...

Post by oldgerboy »

Uberti replica was in the shop to have a tang sight put on it. The caliber was .50-65 and the owner brought 20 BP loaded rounds for us to fire. WOW was that thing nice ... it's been almost 24 hours and I'm still smiling.

As a side note ... my access to the 'net is sketchy for a while but it's good to have y'all around when I get a chance to "beam up".

Just grabbed one. They are really nice. I have not shot it yet but initial impression is most favorable. 1886.

They come from the factory in something as obscure as the 50-65? Wow! I sure was impressed with Lil' Doc's 1876 at the Billy Dixon shoot. The toggle action may not be that strong, but it is very smooth and the way it feeds the cartridge is just so neat! Its almost a controlled-round feed (in fact I think Lil' Doc said it would feed upside down)! Can anyone confirm that for me?

Yep, it had to be a .50-95. That would be a lot of fun! :D

howdy tutt and all
yep i said that. heard it all my life. just to make sure i did not inform you wrong i just made a test. 1873 in 45 colt will empty the magz. upside down. 1873 in 357 will not with 38sp. did not have any mags handy. the 1876 in 45-60 will not the ctg is allowed to fall to far down (now remember the gun is upside down) the boolet catches on the top of the chamber. SO i did tell you the truth. but not all guns will do it. looks like i got a one of three. BUT all will feed on their side. i guess it depends on the individual gun. but i believe all of them can be made to function upsidedown.
FWIW

You are correct, Doc. All of my 1873s, Both Winchester and Uberti will feed and eject with the rifle upside down. My original 1876 in 45-75 will also function upside down. Have no 45-60 loaded to check the Uberti 76 just now. In addition, my Uberti 1873 and 1866, both in 38spl, will function upside. Interesting, I did not know that! Kinda cool - controlled feed! :)

I've had an original 1876 in 50-95 in my hands once ! And I liked it plenty well enough ! However the price was an issue !

And I still think about ordering one of the "contemporary" 1876's in 50-95 !

Local dealer had a used 45-60 on his rack for awhile ! Don't remmember whether it was a Uberti or Cimmarron ! But it sure was a muzzle heavy thing !

As you well know my preference goes to the Marlin camp !

However there are three Winchester rifles I would dearly love to have !

1. Model 71

2. 1886 in 50-110

3. 1876 in 50-95

And of course I wouldn't turn my nose up at an 1886 in 45-90 either !
