9.3 x 74R
Lately I've been thinking about a Number 1 in 9.3 x 74R. Have been checking the auction sites and there are some out there. As long as I have been aquiring fine sportin irons I've really liked the 9.3.
Question is, have any of you guys had any experience with this round? I'd be interested in your input.

sounds like a good prairie dog round to me.
Seriously, what do you plan to hunt with it? Moose, big bears?

Classic and cool cartridge. Fun to shoot as well, kinda like a 32-40 with a bit more oomph! I've been eyeballing those No.1's too, just can't deal with, yet another cartridge! I have 40+ sets of dies as it is!
Go for it anyway! I probably will too,

Re: 9.3 x 74R
I have a double Merkel in 9.3X74R. Quite a bit more ooomph than a 32-40 or a .32 Special. Closer to a .375 H&H.
Easy to load for in a single or double. I haven't done a lot of load development yet. Mainly loaded some 270 grs just to shoot.
But....the only reason I have the caliber is because that's what caliber i found a deal on in a double.

One of my bucket list dream guns is a Chapuis UGEX SxS chambered in 9.3 x 74R This would be a great wild boar or Vancouver Bull rifle, maybe even a Oz Water Buffalo gun.

A friend had one. He really liked it. Sold it due to his own physical problems.

Re: 9.3 x 74R
Well, bears, moose, elk or whatever!
I like the more obscure calibers. Just something about the 9.3 that appeals to me. The 9.3 Mauser is also available in #1s but it just doesn't seem RIGHT in a falling block. Gotta be a rimmed !
Like Jason I too have a lot of calibers that I don't spend enough time with, which means if I got a #1 I'd find ammo, brass ,dies, bullets then work up a load and it would then sit in the safe.
Or do I continue my search for a 28 double...

Re: 9.3 x 74R
Gunny, I hunted plains game in Namibia with the rimless 9,3X62 and can vouch for the effectiveness of these .366 chamberings.
I briefly owned a Chapuis UGEX in 9,3X74, but it was so light that it beat the hell out of me at the range and I found it a new home. It really is just a short step down from the .375 H&H. Should be OK in a No. 1, if those Ruger stocks fit you well. Much as I like the No. 1, I find it pretty merciless in the recoil department, having owned and shot them in .405, .450-400, .416 Rigby, .450 3-inch NE (rechambered .458) and .458 Lott. The latter rifle I had to catch, mid-air as the forend flew out of my left hand. Yes, I FINALLY learned my No. 1 lesson; it just took a while.

My buddy Steve has a double rifle in 9.3 x74r. It is one of his squirrel rifles. Cool rifle but lots of recoil.

Re: 9.3 x 74R
I have a 375 H&H that I put together on a Mauser while in school. Its 25 years old and I haven't needed to shoot it!
I like number 1's but yeah stock dimensions are a bit off for me as well. Of course that's a NON issue for my 218 Bee!
When I started in this collecting game I was told to pick a caliber then go up 1 and down 1 until you have 1 of each!

Gunny, at the end of the day, the guns don't matter when you have Parker needing an ear scratch and a love up.

Re: 9.3 x 74R
Oh trust me Bill - Parker is RELENTLESS when she wants attention!
Think I'm putting the 9.3 project on a back burner for now. I don't really need it, I need to find a 28 double before fall though!

Re: 9.3 x 74R
Gunny,
Here is a rimmed AMERICAN caliber rifle that you might consider.
First a lever action:
And then a double rifle:
Shoots bullets from 210 to 400 grains, giving you a wide range of prospective game targets from" elves to elephants".
Sorry about using Paco's article title, but, it is appropriate.

Our Texas friend could also mention the often-overlooked .35 Winchester, which isn't too far behind the .9,3s.

Re: 9.3 x 74R
Yes Bill, but I shoot a .357MAGNUM Winchester, not a .35 Winchester- will that do out to 100 yards?
Also, 9.3 mm = .366 inch.
.366 minus .357 = only .009 inch difference!
Mmmm mighty close to .357 magnum in bullet size, so with 158 to 180 grain .357 bullets, ???

Re: 9.3 x 74R
Charles, I have lots of respect for the work a properly loaded .357 can do out of carbine out to 100 yards or more.
But that .35 Winchester will push a 250-grain bullet to 2200 or better -- probably a lot more in the new-made 1895s. This old, capable chambering has long piqued my curiosity.

Re: 9.3 x 74R
Bill,
So the .35 Winchester is to the .357 Magnum in a rifle as the 405 WCF is to the 41 Magnum pistol round in a rifle.
WOW - big difference.

Re: 9.3 x 74R
I had never even heard of this round until I was reading an article about reloading for the .410. They said one source for brass .410 cases was 9.3X74R brass so I bought a couple of boxes of the brass. I never took it further than that since I decided .410 wasn't enough for a reliable one shot stop for critters around the farmstead. I moved on to the 28 Ga. which is a much better solution in IMHO.
