He used the one with no scope. The old Marlin is one that I had with me but is to heavy for him to lug around. The Winchester 94 AE Ranger is a perfect size for him.

Went back and looked again and found the proof mark. Due to the nickel finish its hard to see markings because of all the reflections that show up and account of my bad eyes.

The thing that stands out to me is how thin the model legend is . I think its a very old rework .Most of the old nickel plated guns usually the markings are very dark and usually always some tiny amount of flaking. I am pretty sure all the Winchester Model 1887 shotguns were pre-smokeless. The Winchester Model 1901 lever action shotgun was made for smokeless powder, but is only available in 10 guage. If you want 12 guage, you have to go with the Model 1887. That's my understanding anyway. By the way, the 1887...
