I just sent an 1894 Winchester octagon barreled rifle in .32-40 to John Taylor up in Puyallup, WA for a barrel reline in the same caliber. If that stimulus check does come through it will cover the $500 cost.

Proper slave pins are the key. Go to Harbor Freight and for $10 buy a set of their drill bits. They don't drill holes worth a darn, but can be ground into dandy slave pins!

Get a real Colt in .44-40. Find a good used one so you don't have to worry about keeping it new looking. Your rifle ammo will probably work OK, but if not it's just a matter of proper bullet diameter.

That is exactly why I got rid of my .300 Win. Mag. It was way too hard on the several Blacktail deer and one Pronghorn I shot with it. I now use a 6.5 Creedmoor, which is much better suited to the task.

Until I lost it in last summer's fire, I had a metal 25 lb. keg of FFg black powder made by Gearhart-Owen Industries, which went out of business in the early 1980's. I had used two or three pounds of it in my black powder cartridge rifles with no determinable difference.
