Re: wanting thoughts on Winchester 1886 rifles
It is interesting to read different thoughts and opinions on the 1886 and the 40-82 chambering. Geobru, Thanks for the info on the rate of twist, but from what I was thinking, if I was to continue in that direction with a new front , I would maintain the 260 grain. --- 1:28 vs 1:22 .... and your sa...

I have M12s and have been monkey wrenching on them for almost 50 years, but I have never experienced anything like you are describing. I haven't worked on a 3" gun, so I don't know if there is a quirk with the action or not. It could be a function of the bolt being longer and having less levera...

Re: wanting thoughts on Winchester 1886 rifles
I have an original 40-82 that was made in 1887. I shoot smokeless loads in it, but keep velocities at BP rates. The 40-82 had a 1:28 twist and was designed as an express cartridge and shot a 260 grain bullet. I have heard that it will handle a 300 grain bullet, but I haven't had access to any to try...

I have spent most of my life as a forester in the timber industry and have seen this happen before. After getting over the angst of losing the trees, the first thing I would want to know is how much value was in the trees. The 64 is an elegant rifle. I have a 32 Special that I picked up a few years ago. It has a 3 1/2 pound trigger that makes it a mighty fine shooter. One day, when the the light was ideal for my poor eyes, I shot a 3/8 inch group at 50 yards with the open sights. I have only seen 3 around here, and I ...

quick google search, found several loads, different bullets, mostly using 3031, 4895 powders. Surprised to see them so wimpy. velocities with 245-260 bullets were 15-1700 fps. I would think you could get better velocity than that. The original 86's in 40-82 shot a black powder load with a velocity ...

After reading the thread on Gun Show Prices for 22 LR, I started wondering how long 22 rounds remain viable. I have an old brick of CCI mini mags that I bought in ~1968. LGS has a 1961 Winnie 1894 30-30, asking $450. Metal is in decent shape with good bluing color and a little bit of freckling on the edge of the receiver. BL-22 - Most accurate due to the sights. Feels like a kids gun, but is very quick and handy.
