Youre basically shooting stout-ish cowboy action loads and those guys mostly use the fastest pistol and shotguns powders. thanks Scott. It looks funny yep but having a 6'8" wingspan this about the most comfortable I have felt behind a small lever action. Easier to fast work the lever SSAA style. I'm testing 200 xtp at about 1300fps which is about my limit for staying on target so far. Or 1250 with 240's. I reckon ...

easy question for me, a 44 mag rossi 92. That and a 223 wby vanguard are my only centrefires and the 44 sees the most use. It handles hogs and other varmints from subsonics to full power loads.

355-400 grain bullets in 44 mag
Anyone run real heavy bullets in their 44mags? I know its not real practical but have an urge to try some. Was even considering rebarreling a rossi 44mag to tight twist as a subsonic thumper. 400 grains is probably a case of diminishing returns but there is something intriguing about a pistol bullet...

I dont shoot deer but shot hogs with a 357 mag rossi and158xtp. things fell over pretty fast out to 100 yards when bullet starts out at 1850-1900fps. I shot a few at close to 150 yards- as range gets out there they run further but retained velocity is still similar to some 357 pistol loads at muzzle...

Re: 38 special and 44 special RNFP Home defense ammo out of carbines
I think it might be difficult finding what you are looking for in factory ammo. A soft cast HP at subsonic speeds will do what you want but not only will you need to reload, you will also need to cast your own bullets. Mould makers like MP-Molds and NOE should be able to provide the style of mould ...

Re: Velocity fo HSM 38 special RNFP when shot from Rossi 92 Carbine ??
I also chase low velocities in 44 and formerly 357 magnum carbines for low noise. Light loads of fast burning powders I found 150-200fps was typical going from pistol to the carbine barrel . One surprise was the Remington UMC 38+P 125 SJHP which runs about 950fps from a pistol but chronied at just u...

The reality is most expanding bullets for 44 will not expand subsonically. I would say the only RNFP that would expand low speed are very soft cast and I dont know a lot about them so cant comment. For jacketed bullets your best bet is the JHP designed for 44 special velicotes. I did a bit of study...

XTP bullets feed very reliably in my Marlin 1894, like my practice RNFP’s, and are designed to expand at very low velocities, as low as 700 fps in the 38’s and 750 fps in the 44’s. https://i.ibb.co/tp24xnp/2-C7163-FA-1-C85-4-B34-8-C13-0-AE398-B58-DCC.webp those velocity envelope charts by hornady a...

Most factory 44 ammo is going to be running pretty fast out of a carbine, that isnt to say it wont do the job. Recoil isnt too bad in a 44 carbine anyway. For lowest recoil/blast options I'd consider 44 special SD ammo as long as they cycle in your gun . Hornady critical defence 165FTX in 44 special...

45 colt but with -230 grain gold dot JHP handloads . They open to 70cal at under 900fps. In fact this bullet still expands under 800fps. I like similar load of 900fps in 44 special with 200gn gold dots. I am an ex-357 junkie but prefer the bigger slower cals now as they are much easier on my earballs.

Semiautos I agree, working a lever fast I feel more comfortable with my thumb doing just one job, stabilising its side of the forend . Plenty of fingers on the other side to both stabilise and hit a switch. I try to do some practice of both shoulders too so the thumb gets a workout anyway.
