Re: Big Horn Armory Model 89 500 S&W Magnum
Yep, 460 S&W and maybe a price closer to $1000 than $2000 and they've got me for sure. And the pistol grip suits me fine.

Re: Insurance rifles
Nobears, the cops in your area may need to be brought into the 21st century. Our local boys have had considerable luck recovering stolen stuff if ( but only if ) the thief sells to a pawn shop or similar. Pawn shops report serial numbers, these go into http://www.leadsonline.com and when your police...

Re: 45 Colts - Lee Case Expander BEST
Good tips here. I use both the Lee and the Lyman, depending on cartridge. But as El Chivo notes, the Lyman as it comes from the factory likes to ruin the occasional neck when case and die aren't perfectly in line to start. I take the expander from the Lyman M die and change its shape (using bench gr...

Really fine looking job: just the ticket for chasing wapiti through the thick stuff. In case somebody wants the functional equivalent without the work, here's the Rossi m92 in .454 Casull: http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb418/earlmck/Loaded4546538.jpg Shown here at 7# with 9 in the magazine and...

Re: OT - Crickett Rifle Info
Ouch! Thanks for bringing that little detail to light, Joe. We got one of these (pink stock was the attraction) for the granddaughter about 4 years ago. She shot the bejeesus out of it for a couple of years, all with 22 l ong rifle. I wonder if those from a few years ago were OK with the regular amm...

Re: A couple of neat old photos. What do you think?
Did anyone ever really wear those sheep skin chaps? In Montana they sure did. Still do, I'd bet. You can't get any colder than when you are up on top of one of those hayburner things with a stiff breeze blowing... Those fellows are real well armed. No wonder we almost had the buffalo go extinct. Gr...

Re: Pointy bullets in tubular magazines
Well dang, Savage, all us levernuts are a little crazy, aren't we? And JP, I've got a feeling that the reason there isn't any warning on the 35Rem factory ammo is because at least some of the folks over there in the ammo dept. at Remington realize it is a total non-problem. The problem would c...

Re: Pointy bullets in tubular magazines
The reason this kid got stirred up about the "Pointy-bullet-in-tube-mag" thing is a little wildcatting project I got started on. My personal prejudice is that I think the m92 was the finest little gun ever made, and Rossi is doing a nice job of turning out new ones (with a little smoothing...

Re: New Ruger Redhawk with pics
Shooter, you done real good there. My Redhawk is my favorite pistol, and I have several Colts to compare with. My grandboys once a year get to snag a gun of their choice out of my safe. I put about 6 or 7 off-limits, and the Redhawk is one of them. My SuperRedhawk, though, is probably getting claime...

Grandboys have thinned down my stuff and made room in the gun safe for... Dang, I think I'd like a Rossi m92, 24" octagon, in .256 Win. (kinda' a 25/20 on steroids).

Re: Pointy bullets in tubular magazines
A number of good points being made. I didn't give much detail on my test procedure, I see. Here's a bit more: Yes, the firing-pin cartridge is a bit lighter than a my other rounds, but only by about 5 grains. I drilled out enough hole to slide about 1/4" of steel down for epoxying. The cartridg...

Re: Pointy bullets in tubular magazines
Much appreciating the input. Obviously poop can happen at times with no regard to the shape of your bullet! And I have been going along thinking old Arthur Savage made up the "no pointy bullets in the tube" mantra about 1895 as another point in favor of his new design, and it was just repe...

Re: Crimping the .30-30 cartridge
I shoot a lot of cast bullets in my 30-30's. Mostly Lyman 311041 (180 gr. flat nose) and 311467 (180 gr. semi-pointy). I like to bell slightly with the Lyman 2-step expander die so I don't shave any lead when seating, and then when seating I adjust the seater die so it just removes the bell without ...

Pointy bullets in tubular magazines
Don't use pointy bullets in tubular magazines!!! So has there been a magazine article written about lever actions in the past 100 years that failed to include that warning? Maybe so, but not many. And yet I'll bet a fair number of us lever-nuts have violated the warning at times. I know I have (110...

Yikes! Pushin' $5 grand with 10 days to go when I just looked. I think I'll the collector folks battle that one out. If a feller needed to pursue critters today (cold rain coming down on old snow here in "sunny Central Oregon") Rossi is making nifty m92's. Can be had in stainless steel sho...

Very fine looking batch of leverguns, M.M. I can see you are a Browning fan. What is your experience with them? The only one I ever got to shoot had kinda' a poor trigger-pull on it, but seemed real fine in the accuracy department, though we were just popping white rocks on a far hillside, not makin...

Re: Tell me about the .38-40 WCF
I acquired my 38-40 about 20 years ago. At that time 38-40 headstamped brass was not readily available like it is now, but I got a really good deal on 500 44-40's. They were real bad to wrinkle the necks when sized down to 38 (actually .40 as we know) until I figured out that you need to iron out th...

If you want to do lots of shooting over many years to come, get a Ruger. I own a couple wore-out colt SAs, a wore-out colt Python, and a couple of rugers with more rounds thru 'em than you would believe and they are still tight as when I bought 'em.

Powder has remained pretty consistent. Main difference between new max loads and old max loads comes about from better pressure-measuring technology. The boys found out what pressures those old loads were really generating. A few cries of "holy goose poop" or similar, and they backed off t...

Here in Oregon... Well, the Department of Fish and Wildlife (locally known as Odeeef&W) never did manage deer. They count 'em and lower the tag numbers yearly. But deer numbers are pretty much habitat determined and our habitat took a big whammy from the enviros when they managed to virtually el...
