I think from a logistical stand point the Canadian Forces wanted to go with a NATO round and 5.56 was to light for Polar Bears and Grizzlies so 7.62 won out. Much easier to supply 5000 men and women with 7.62. I do remember Ruger proposing a M77 with the Paddle stock for the Rangers in the early 90'...

As per the OP, I had a couple punks attack a brother of mine with pepper spray and a collapsible baton in a movie theater hallway once. It was pretty rough. I cannot imagine bear spray.

I like a short barreled shotgun for the truck. Currently use a PAS Armed Gladiator with a 13 " Barrel. Made in Turkey. Nice light Aluminiun framed. Some bird shot, Buck and slugs and I have grouse thru Grizzly covered.

The Benelli looks like a great Patrol shotgun. Nice choice.
