Re: Tried out my new 106 year-old 44-40 SRC (photo)
When I saw the photos of the old carbine, it looked so "rode hard and hung up wet" that I was hoping it would give me a 4" group at 10 yards to use inside the house during a home invasion. However, this gun has been a real good surprise to me.

Tried out my new 106 year-old 44-40 SRC (photo)
I couldn't stand wondering any longer, so I just stepped out into the backyard for a few minutes to see how this old Winchester Model 1892 44-40 carbine works (see earlier thread for photo of the old-timer). Set up a target at 25 yards, slipped five rounds into the magazine, leaned against a tree an...

Snagged a vintage Winchester 44-40 SRC (photo)
Just got this in the mail yesterday. A fellow from northern BC contacted me and said he is responsible to sell off the estate of someone who passed away there. He sent me some photos of this very well-worn Winchester Model 1892 saddle ring carbine in 44-40, made in 1913, and offered it at a price th...

Here's a photo of my original Model 53 32-20 made in 1929. It has taken care of quite a few varmint problems on my property. I do have to admit, however, that I went on Gunbroker and saw a few super nice Browning 53's that were just gorgeous. The 32-20 is one of my favourite cartridges, and my first...

Re: Range report Model 1886 in 40-65
Very nice '86 and an excellent group for your home-cast bullets. I would suggest that your home cast bullets are soft-cast (air cooled?). Commercial bullets are usually hard cast bullets to facilitate faster and easier casting. In my own experience, I've found that soft-cast bullets work much better...

Pitchy, I really like what you did with that box. I like old wooden boxes with the nice dovetail joints. Headed over to the range today to try out a new load for my Winchester Model 1894 38-55. This particular rifle was made in 1904. It has a full octagon barrel and a tang sight. I set up the target at 100 yards and took five shots. Measuring with my steel ruler, all five shots went into a 1 & 7/8&...

Thanks, all. I've had a few 38-40s in the past ('73 and '92 and an original Marlin 1894 SRC), and really wanted one to keep. If it performs at the range, which I am sure it will, given the beauty of a bore), then this one is the official keeper.

Just got this in the mail today. A Marlin model 1889, chambered in 38 W (38-40) It was shipped from the Marlin factory in December of 1889. So it is a first year rifle. Full octagon barrel, still some colour case hardening on the lever. The bore is beautiful. I hope to get it to the range this week....

Already figured this out long ago and acquired the appropriate hardware ... a 30-30 carbine. I've got two of them (one for my wife, cause she's coming with me if we have to disappear into the northern wastes for several years) and more ammo than I'd care to carry in my pack.

Note that there is no mention of it being offered in a take-down version? That was a popular option with this model. The takedown version is mentioned in the second column of the write-up, about 2/3rds of the way down. According to my ongoing survey, exactly 1/3 of all Model 53's were built as take...

I've had a couple different original 1876's from the 1870's and 80's and never saw a ding like that in their hammers. They were case hardened and didn't seem to change with use, neither did the rear of the bolt.

JMO, but I would think a 3-month lead time for submitting an ad is about the print industry standard. If that was the case back then, it translates to Winchester submitting the ad sometime in April 1924. That is possible, and by today's standards might be fine. I'm a canon user, and follow their re...
