Gosh it worked! The entrance shot was at the second rib from the back which nicked the 3 rib and exited just behind the right shoulder. Yeah, major wreckage of the lungs! Nice little carbine, I really hated to loose it.

Grandson with my 1894 Marlin=work
Early this morning my 13 year old Grandson killed his first deer, a 6 point buck. He was with his Dad and his 8 year old brother was with me. He made a killing shot with my 1894 Marlin .44 that I had loaded with my cast 431244 air cooled wheelweight bullet and 19 grains of WC-820 for about 1538 fps....

The Belding & Mull is the only one I have used that meters flake powders such as Bullseye or stick powders such as 4895 within one tenth of a grain and ball powders are always spot on. Fluffy flake powders, think Unique, will vary as much as .3 grain. It is a bit slower than the rotating type me...

Big Game=Big caliber, I'd want nothing less than .375 but, would perfer .45 cal. if I was doing the hunt. Cast tough bullets that will hold together and not shatter like 100% linotype may. Goat, I remember that I once had a 99 that had the forearm screw made with the sling eye affixed to it. I'm sure there is still some of them around, so another option to the barrel band.

Ball powders are supposedly less prone to deteriorate than the stick powders. Store them in a cool place and they will last for years. I still have a pound of surplus WWII powder that works just fine.

Sounds like a good load! I am curious, I have a Marlin 1894 .44 mag that I am debating trying to reload for. Ammo just cost to much for it to keep buying it off the shelf. The Lyman 311041, as mentioned, is a fine bullet for most of the .30 cal., but I find the RCBS 30-180 FN is just a little better in my 336A. The RCBS bullet is used with 35 grains of H-414 for a deer load that gets 1970 fps and have also had good luck with 25 grains of Rx7 paired with Lyman 311407 f...

+1 to J Miller's suggestion. My mold casts them at .310 and I run them in a .311" die to lube and attatch the check. My best load is 35 grains of H-414 which was reccomended by Mr. John Kort as being a good load and it certainly is.

Like others have stated, aircooled wheelweights are very good for hunting. The list you show looks to be just cast hardness and is a little soft for aged wheelweights as mine run 12-14 BHN after a month of casting. Also remember that a larger, heavier bullet cools slower thus making it softer.

Now your're talking! I had a 225 grain mold made for my .358, run them a little over 2000 fps, and will use it on game through elk size for sure. I have never heard of one shooting groups that large. Make sure the forearm isn't binding against the receiver and barrel. Yeah, you probably need to stick with the 200-220 grain bullets. I noticed an error in my post, " Hornady lists 2300-2800 fps and only has 2163 fps as the top velocity in the .356." HODGDON listed 2163 fps with the 250s and I don't have any information from Hornady on the .356.

A 200 grain will work fine on elk as long as broadside shots are taken but, don't try to shoot from one end to the other. The velocity on most of the 250s will be too low for reliable expansion as Hornady lists 2300-2800 fps and only has 2163 fps as the top velocity in the .356. Now that I've said t...

A nice EG. Look on the projection that the lever pivots on and find a small oval with a number and letter, an example would be 12D. This letter will tell you when the rifle was assembled. My guess is it's going to be a D which would put it circa 1952.
