Mark, I have no experience using 4350 in the .30-30 except in capacity loads but if your goal is to try using it in 1,600 f.p.s. loads with a 200 gr bullet, then perhaps if 35 grs = 2,000 f.p.s. then (1600/2000 x 35 grs.) = 28 grs. Re: What sort of pressures are our old-style cases built for

earlmck, By the late 1890's Balloon head cases were the solid head type and were known as the SHBP (Solid Head Button Pocket) type. Prior to that they were the folded head type and certainly weaker. Griff, Welcome to the world of NRA Cowboy Silhouette! It certainly is a heap of fun. Actually, you don't need 1,200 f.p.s. in the .45 Colt for the pistol cartridge category. I would definitely not use Titegroup to try and achieve the early W.H.V. velocity (1,580 f.p.s.). A little too much and pressures will soar! Not good. Probably ok for close to 1,400 f.p.s. velocities though. Back then the factories used Sharpshooter or SR80 which have burning rates closer to 2400 wh...

I load Titegroup in 6.2 gr doses under a 200 gr cast bullet. Velocity runs around 1,150 f.p.s. and produces very good accuracy. That s the recommended max load from Hodgdon to meet SAMMI MAP for the .44-40. It is too fast burning to reach your 1,500 f.p.s. goal. 4227 would be a much better choice. 2...
