I had a 40-82 original at one time. You are right about the 260 grain bullets. I'd recommend that you not go too much higher in weight. I really like a big dog, but in the wilderness, a big dog is a real asset and can give you advance warning of trouble or buy you 30 seconds or a minute if you are caught unprepared.

All of my old Winchesters have flat crowns except for a 1907 Model 1894 38-55 SRC, which I'm not sure if the crown is flat or very slightly crowned. Even my 1924 Model 53 25-20 levergun has a flat crown.

I'd have the U-joints checked and hope that's what it is. I've had a few go on me and, the faster you drive, the worse the vibration. If it's not the U-Joints, then prepare to walk around with a very thin wallet for a while.

1. a bent barrel, which leads to vertical vibrations before the bullet leaves the barrel

With the slower powders like IMR3031 (which is the slowest one I use), I've found that the extreme spread in velocity drops the fuller the case is, and it can be very, very significant. There's no sharp cuttoff line .... the fuller the better but I like to have a minimum of 60% full once the bullet ...

I'd recommend a Winchester or Marlin 30-30 from the 1950's. They are still relatively reasonable in price, and are a first class gun that will last him for all his life, and you can't go wrong with the caliber.

The original Winchesters had a groove diameter closer to .380. I have two. A rifle made in 1899 has a groove diameter of .382 and a SRC made in 1907 has a groove diameter of .379.

I suspect it happened during shipping. One of the two rifles shipped to me this year had a box that looked like it had been bent. I can't recall for sure if it was the 30-30 box or the 44-40 box, but I think it was the 30-30 box. The 44-40 shoots straight.
