That Browning finish is actually quite easy to take off.
Problem is, it I'd also tinted to hide the low quality wood.
I take it off anyway and go back with a satin finish

For what good quality paint or epoxy costs, you could almost put new sheet metal up. That is, provided you could do your own labor.

You might try a light acid wash on the shiney parts before painting. Don't breathe the lead fumes.

With virtually no atmo to speak of bullet velocities should be higher and allow easier escape velocity . I guess your gun might need an oxygen tank to achieve optimum ignition.
