I'm positive it's been cut. The measurement from end of muzzle to center of the sight dovetail is always almost exactly 1". This gun's front sight dovetail is too close to the crown. Additionall, the mag tube dovetails never line up with front sight dovetails, as that would really weaken the ba...

I can only second what Ken said. I use nothing but smokeless in my old Marlins and Ballards, but with loads in low velocity-low pressure ranges and cast bullets. There was no metallurgy, other than seat of the pants experience back then, but that was very good. These old guns probably haven't seen b...

The 1888 Marlin looks very much like the later 1892 Winchester. I've often had someone ask me why I have a 1892 Win. on my table when I display my 1888. Of course it's always someone who's not a bigtime Win. or Marlin fan that asks that question. The 1888 was not offered in .25-20, and the 1889 only...

Yes I think th newer carriers seem a bit more meaty, but the rest of the parts seem about right. I've installed newer breechbolts into old guns that were missing them, and they work great. Of course the caliber is specific, so a .38-40 or .44-40 will need to use a newer .44 breechbolt, and the small...

Hi Joe, Lots of parts interchange between the two, but the new ones having a coil spring, vs. flat mainspring make the mainsprings and hammer not interchangeable. The screws will interchange, plus the bolt assembly, and carrier. Lower trigger plates will need to be d7t for the mainspring to go old, ...

"New" to me #3 Ballard

Got a very nice #3 Ballard today. Actually got it a couple weeks ago, but it arrived today! The #3 Ballards were made in .22 short, long, LR, and .25 Stevens RF. This one is a .25 Stevens, so it wont see much shooting time, as ammo is tough to find! Anyway it's been very well cared for, and has the ...

The softer the better Griff, as it will harden when heated to weld. I use coat hanger with good results, but mild steel with a TIG works well.
If you're gping to use rod as in a stick welder, I'd advise rethinking it. Best to TIG weld it.-Vall

Last week this same dealer had a mint 1967 336 Texan in .30-30, and I called my buddy who bought it for the same $219 price! He had both guns tagged as "336 Marlin" with no reference to the ADL or T suffixes. I don't think he knows collectable Marlins.

336A-Deluxe

Picked up this 336A-DL Sat. on the way home from the gun club. It's a .30-30 from 1951, and dealer let me have it for $219 out the door! It's the first 336A-DL I've seen for sale around these parts.

Here's my opinion. I'd leave the metal as is. Just put the filler screws in. Then I'd put it together and just enjoy it as-is. If I d...

An 1893 Marlin with PG frame would be my basis. Then I'd add a 30" full octagon barrel, with full magazine, XXXX wood, with F checkering, and 5-3 engraving. Ballard midrange tang sight, and windage adj. globe front sight.
