BLR in 308, 2-7 Redfield scope, 1/2 inch group at 125 yards, 3 shot group. I shot the head off the thumb tack that was holding the target up with the fourth shot.

HUMOR - A different kind of blonde joke
A pretty blonde gets on an airplane after a tiring day and sits down next to an attorney who sees an easy mark and he says to her, This is a four hour flight, so lets play a game to pass the time. She is really tired and told him she was not interested. Not to be dismissed so easily, he says, No, th...

Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread. I knew that that some of you would have experience in overcoming sighting problems when the old optics start to decline. It sure has given me some new ideas and best of all, hope that I'll be able to draw a bead on that target that disappeared on me!

Old Savage Posted: Put a scope on it! Good suggestion, sometimes... I scoped my BLR, but I don't think that is an option for my 86's. The 40-82 has a buckhorn rear sight and the 45-90 has a Redfield peep on it. That particular day, I was having trouble with the peep too. It made me realize ...

Shooting with old eyes. Any Suggestions?
Alas, by posting this thread, I am admitting to the world that I can no longer see worth a darn.. After living most of my life with 20-10 vision, this admission is the pits!! :? This is especially annoying when trying to use open sights. The last time I went out shooting, I tried using my &qu...

I wear a red plaid wool coat when I'm far enough back from the road to be away from other hunters. (That's over 3 miles) Otherwise, I wear a lightweight hunter orange vest. One time when I was deer hunting, I was kneeling on a rock outcrop watching a bull elf on the hillside below. Five cows decided...

I've tied flies for over three decades. Started out tying steelhead and salmon flies because they are bigger and easier to tie, and were more expensive to buy. After that, I started tying trout flies which also work for all kinds of things like bass, perch, blue gill, catfish, suckers, whitefish, ca...

I bought my first levergun in 1977. It was a BLR in 308. I reallly liked that short throw lever action compared to the old 86 Winchester that was in my dad's closet while I was growing up. The first two shots out of the gun were shot with open sights at 50 yards with factory ammo, and were touching....

40-82 and 45-90 Range Report - Comparing Fillers w/ pics
Last evening, I got out of the house and punched some more holes in paper with my 40-82, and shot my 45-90 for the first time. My object was to compare the results of the same loads with TP and cornmeal fillers to see if or what difference changing fillers makes. In the 40-82 I loaded 25 gr of 5744 ...

Thus far I just fill it to the rim of the cartridge and seat the bullet. This compresses the powder and filler enough to keep them from mixing it up. I measured the total bullet weight and found up to a 5 grain difference in the weight. I attribute the difference to the filler weight, but will be ch...

I have been gearing up for some time to start testing loads to push through my 40-82. It has an oversize bore, so I needed to get .410 bullets. I ordered some bullets from LTD Custom Cast Bullets and while I was waiting for them to arrive, a friend gave me some .410 bullets he cast for a modern 40-6...

My go to gun for hunting is a 70's vintage BLR in 308. Reason is that its absolutely accurate. It's a quick woods gun and handles deer and elk with dispatch. That said, my 86 in 40-82 is really fun to shoot and is going to see some action this fall for the first time in 80+ years. As others have sai...

Gun Stocks Inc. Any experience with them?
I found this web site some time ago and am wondering if anybody on this forum has ever bought a stock from them. A plain walnut butt stock for $45 and a forend for $30 for an 86 seems fairly reasonable to me if the product is any good. Fancy wood is available if desired. http://www.gunstocksinc.com

He really was quite a roust-about. The rest of the story was how he died. Apparently one of his sons got in a bar fight and there was a woman who was badmouthing the way he had fought in the fight. I managed to salvage the thread on the old forum site when some of you discussed the methodology of taking the excess off the outside of the casing. I was more prone to inside neck ream, but as I thought about it, it shouldn't make any difference. I will try that method when I get the bullets. I wil...

Thanks to all of you for the advice and sharing your experiences. The bullets were 1:20 alloy that were used in the BP load. I was really surprised that they didn't fill the bore and engage the rifling. The other two loads I tried were 30grains of H-4198 with the same bullet as the BP load, and 34 g...

In the 70's I made it a personal mission to spruce up the guns that I owned at the time with a Tru-Oil finish. I still remember how proud I was of a 22 that I had put about 3-5 coats of oil on. I got my first deer in 1965 when I was 14. It was a blacktail doe that I shot at 15 yards with a Remington Model 721, 30-06. I had saved my paper route money to buy a rifle. I went with my dad to a hardware store that had some used guns, and fell in love with a model 70 featherweight in 30-06, with ...
