Re: Took My 1894 Winchester hunting
Really cool pics Bro! We never see trees that big here in the east. The one thing that really amazes me is that every tree has its own rifle. Probably to keep those two man saw teams out of the woods. --------- :D -------6 That's right 6! They are all over the place! Only thing is every time I grab...

I took a couple days off to take my new to me 32 SPL for a walk in the woods. I didn't see any buck deer, but I did get to reconnect with a beautiful area. I went up onto Forest Service land in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. This is an area that burned in 1918. I have been stumping around thes...

Easiest one was a 5x5 bull. I shot it through the heart at 35 yards with my 308 BLR. It went about 50 feet. I fired the signal shots and 4 guys arrived at about the time I had it gutted. They drug it whole about 200 yards downhill and slid it down a cutbank into the back of a pickup. Hardest one was...

How can a rifle have the "correct" front and rear sights on it and shoot high with the rear sight at the lowest position? Seems that if you did change a sight and the gun doesn't hit where you want it that you would correct the problem. I have had this experience with two Winchesters in th...

I was pleased with the outcome. The new tube matches pretty well because there is still a lot of original bluing on the barrel.
Next step is to get a front sight that is correct for the vintage of the gun!

Thing I'd be worried about is if the bullet is too long and won't stabilize. Mike Venturino reported that he shot a 300 grain bullet in an 86 in 40-82 in an article he wrote, so it might work. I tried a 325 grain in my 40-82 that tumbled. If you are shooting < 1800 fps in an 86 with a 1:28 twist rat...

For the wood, I look at the wood/metal fit. The wood should be proud to the metal. The hardest place to hide a refinish job is at the wrist and next to the butt plate. If its been sanded at all, the wood will lose that proud edge and looks rounded. The old Winchesters have that redish color, and if ...

Ray,
I'd take it apart to see if there are parts that aren't working properly. Someone mentioned leading in the chamber that might keep the action from closing all the way. I don't know, but if you get the gun torn down, you will be able to check out the chamber.
Good luck!
