I've had good results using Break-Free CLP to clean up yucky ol' guns. I slather it on, wait a while, use non-steel brushes, toothpicks etc. to help loosen the hard stuff, repeat until satisfied. I prefer to not use degreasing type solvents for stuff like this.

Well, it sounds like Jr. is a very fine shot and the .22 mag is entirely adequate for him! :D Personally, I like big bores just because they are more satisfying to shoot. But that's just me... :?

I have one of those and it's a real jewel. There were some edges inside that needed a little polishing, but no chips. Fit and finish are as good as can be expected from a production gun. Very nice trigger, too. Hope you like yours as much as I like mine! :D

Saw a Marlin 39 in a little gun shop that has a slim uncheckered fore end and stock and a black trigger. Looks like an older one, but don't know when it might have been made.
