Re: Explain This: Savage 99 vs. Win 94
I love the 99s as well as the Marlins and Winchesters. I have to say that a 99 with a 24" barrel and pistol grip is one of the best handling rifles I know of. You have to handle one to understand. The thing I don't like about the 99s is the somewhat awkward and sometimes noisy safety and the te...

1950s Savage 99F in 300 Savage is one of my favorite rifles. They are light, handy, accurate, powerful enough for most anything I hunt and just plain cool. Congratulations on your find.

Back in the early 90s I was working as a fly-fishing guide in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I was taking two fishermen a couple of miles down a trail to one of my honey holes. At one point the trail was about 100 ft about the stream and running parallel to it. I happened to glance down on...

Re: OT- Remington 700 questions (722/788 added as well)
Remington 722 and 721 rifles are great old rifles. They usually have a much better trigger than the unmodified newer 700s. The biggest downside of them to me is that they have a greater stock drop than the 700s. You have to get your scope mounted nice and low on those 722 and 721s to get a good sigh...

Re: Just saw a savage 99 in 250-3000? Hmmmm? Price check
There are two distinctly different post war Savage 99 250s. The ones made until 1960 have a lever safety and checkered pistol grip stocks. Whether they be 99EG or F they will have a 1 in 14" twist which will not usually stabalize the heavier 25 cal bullets very well. The later ones made in the ...

Frankly, I would stay away from the current manufacture Lyman sights. I have had several that were wobbly. They have really let the quality slip in recent years. I'd choose the VX-II 2-7 x 28 Ultralight. It's the lowest power/largest objective/shortest/lightest scope I see on their website. I have the older Vari-X compact AO in 2-7x28 and it gives good low-light visibility. I can't see well in low light through the 20 mm objectives. +1 This is really an und...

They are cool little rifles. The ammo is not common and is expensive. I had one once and about a box of ammo. I had my fun burning through the ammo and then realized that it would cost me a fortune to shoot it often. I sold it a week later. It always seemed like a very heavy gun for a carbine anyway.

Your 99A rifle was made in the 1970s. I have owned them in 250, 300 and 308. The 308 did kick noticeably harder than the 300 for some reason.
