You guys have me convinced . . . I like to keep a gun in the truck when I'm out 'fire-wooding', in case of a feral dog pack or coyotes or whatever, although I've only taken a few shots in several years, and I usually have a side-arm if needed for personal protection. My two cents is .357s for both. 158gr JSPs will take out deer with a good hit, and do not kick. The 1894C, and the Rossi 92 clones are a handy size. Move up to 180gr if you desire a lot more thump. I guess great (and twisted) minds think alike... Thanks for the PM/trigger stuff by the way...

I'd get a lever action in .357, vs. .44 Mag, since it is easier to get milder loads for, and yet perfectly capable of killing a deer. Stepping up to the .44 Mag adds much noise and recoil, unless you handload .44-Special-level loads (and the factory .44 special round noses aren't very good hunting r...

Glad you're okay, but a tip for the future. Don't tie yourself to a tree when a tornado's in the area, get in a ditch or even just flat out on the ground instead. The Encore ML's put less 'soot' on the scope than any others I've used except the Savage ML-10, and with a QD scope mount and that break-open action, you can clean them so easily; there's no need typically to clean the action/buttstock part. For the uses you cite (in a boat and/or close deer hunting), I think the longer barrel of either brand would just get in the way. Since you're planning a 'peep' sight, you don't really 'need' the Marlin for its 'scope-ability'. Both are available in stainless, although you'll have to pay a bit more ...
