Howdy. I'm still hanging in there, thankfully, no doubt to the many who have been praying for me. Wow, you certainly have been doing a lot of testing! Hmmmm,. If the humidity is low....say less than 30%, that could be the reason of the less accuracy of the straight b.p. load. Another reason might b...

Re: More on 44-40 exploring reloading
Here is a question, a riddle if you will :
If the rifle will shoot a duplex load of 6 grains of H4227 under 32 grains of BP, and a 217 grain bullet very well, then what variables would cause a decrease in accuracy when shooting the same bullet with a full black powder load of 36 - 40 grains?

Joe, I may not have made it clear in my posts that I have a .430 bore and I am casting and shooting .431 (depending on the alloy up to .433) bullets. I started with a mold based on the original .44-40 bullet design, using pure lead bullets, and moved to other tin/lead alloys from there, when I saw t...

Re: U.S. Navy Collision... How does THAT happen???
Probably nothing to do with radar or physics, There should have been a watch on the bridge of both vessels, watching for exactly this thing, both will have more than enough radar for detecting each other and avoiding any sort of collision. There may be more to the story, if the Navy ship was doing s...

The bore slugs .430 of an inch which married with Uberti's published literature. The bullets drop from the mold at .431 when made of pure lead, and .433 when at 1:16 tin alloy, and I shoot them as they are. (The .433's chamber with slight resistance)I have not sized any of the bullets so far. I have...

I came back from hunting back in April quite happy with my Winchester 73 short rifle. I had shot two deer with it on its first trip. I used to be in the middle, I used to have Rossi carbine in .44-40, and also a Rossi Octagonal barrelled rifle in .44-40 too, with a tang sight. The rifle shot very well indeed, not just because of the tang sight either. I found the carbine more difficult to shoot well off the bench than the rifle, ...

Well, considering I can shoot straight through a red deer with pure lead bullets with black powder in a .44-40 at 75 yards, I am pretty sure that a .45 colt bullet out of a rifle will go right through the lungs at any range you can hit him with it, as far out as the trajectory will let you. Yes, you are using the rifle correctly. The half cock position is the safety. You load the rifle, cock it with the lever, chambering a round, and then hold the trigger and hold the hammer with your thumb and go forward and into the half cock position. The rifle cannot fire from this position. So you...

Apparently 40 grains is a max charge with the round ball in these. I dont know how much would be lost with the cylinder gap. It is not critical though, I am just thinking about performance because its main duty will be rabbit and hare hunting.
