With a bit of bedding, a match barrel, and globe front sight, many an M1 Garand is a sub-MOA shooter. Even without those mods, they are pretty accurate.

I actually PREFER a rubber recoil pad, so the gun's butt doesn't slide on the floor if I lean it against something. Sometimes, I like one to lengthen the pull, as well. The 'John Masen' ones made for the Ruger 10/22, 96/22, 96/44 and Mini-14, look to be a near-perfect fit for the Rossi 'Puma' carbin...

I simply Love BOTH!, and do not think I could get by without either. I just have to have Rifles set up both ways! I even have a recently purchased Marlin 336 I would love to set up with a Quick Detach mount to use a Peep, and then re-attach the Scope. It would be the best of both worlds!! Same here...

First - thanks Joe for the very helpful and detailed information. I found it interesting!

Second - as a 'shooter' vs. a 'collector' - I don't mind the 'drag line' on my gun(s); it's like any other 'wear and tear' - just means I've shot the gun a bit, or at least dry-fired it.

NO barrel contact should be more consistent than precise barrel contact, although it doesn't look as traditional. With modern synthetic stocks and synthetic finishes for wood stocks, I'll bet the humidity and so on affect barrel contact less than in the past, but I'm with you - I'll bet most of the ...

I realize there is something to be said for doing it yourself. But it is a ton of hard work, and you really do not save alot of money. Especially after you hit a few nails, and pay for your saw. And you definitely have to value your time at zero. Also that type of cutting is very hard on a chainsaw...

The tradeoff is that for those long, heavy bullets you need more RPM's for, to get those RPM's without a faster twist, you'd have the alternative of making them go faster, but that raises pressures even faster than increasing the twist rate.

If I got another, it would be a Para Ordnance stainless double-stack. Or a Rock Island clone. I don't really 'need' the extra rounds, but I have large enough hands that the regular 1911 grip feels like holding a deck of cards - too thin to really get a 'grip' on. Since there is no gas vent in this rifle, the only path for the blast to go was down through the trigger lockwork so the only damage was to fingers, forearms and ears. I wonder if it would be possible to drill a 'strategic' hole that would serve as a gas vent? I realize it would violate any warrant...
