With a bit of bedding, a match barrel, and globe front sight, many an M1 Garand is a sub-MOA shooter. Even without those mods, they are pretty accurate.

It took years of setting money aside, driving 20-year-old cars, etc., but now we live where we have a 100 yd outdoor range about 300 yds from our back door. I actually PREFER a rubber recoil pad, so the gun's butt doesn't slide on the floor if I lean it against something. Sometimes, I like one to lengthen the pull, as well. The 'John Masen' ones made for the Ruger 10/22, 96/22, 96/44 and Mini-14, look to be a near-perfect fit for the Rossi 'Puma' carbin...

First - thanks Joe for the very helpful and detailed information. I found it interesting!
Second - as a 'shooter' vs. a 'collector' - I don't mind the 'drag line' on my gun(s); it's like any other 'wear and tear' - just means I've shot the gun a bit, or at least dry-fired it.

The tradeoff is that for those long, heavy bullets you need more RPM's for, to get those RPM's without a faster twist, you'd have the alternative of making them go faster, but that raises pressures even faster than increasing the twist rate.
