I have two Vortex Vipers, one on a Savage Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor and one on a Remington 700 SPS in 22-250. Both are excellent and I can clearly see ground squirrels at 500+ yards. I think for the money Vortex is the best buy out there.

I've not used that method on a gun stock, but I do use it to put a "barber pole" stripe on muzzleloader ramrods. I wrap the rod with masking tape, leaving about a quarter inch gap between the tape edges, then torch burn the un-taped area to create the stripe.

I have the Winchester 1886 Deluxe pistol grip take-down made by Miroku. It is an exceptionally fine rifle, but I did have to replace the hammer and trigger with Browning components to eliminate the rebounding hammer, which gave frequent light strikes. Now it fires every time.
