Marlins 2 Deer 0
Beautiful opening morning yesterday to the deer season. I let a small spike go by me as a few minutes prior saw a larger buck north of me who would show up in a few minutes. My 82 year old father didn't, the spike ended up in front of him and Dad shot it with his Marlin 336 in 30-30 with Federal 170...

There are "sling shot" type devices just for that purpose. Shoots small throw ball with line attached, then you can tie on whatever to it.

Sat in same stand I have hunted since '79, Small buck happened by and met up with 170grain Speer bullet from my 24" barreled Marlin 336A in 32 special. Didn't turn out so well for mr. Buck. Lungs came out in pieces, hole in the heart. 35 yard shot. So I get no difficulty points, but I have shot...

I used a Sako (old model with Bofors steel barrel) Forester bolt action.
Federal sierra game king 100gr. Dropped in his tracks, dead when I walked up to him. 181 yards.
I would use the 32 special on the Mule deer vanclew, but then I am a bit biased.

I had a chance once to buy a BLR in 257 Roberts, didn't need it at the time, regret that.
Going antelope hunting in a week or so, would have been the gun of choice.
I have a Sako Forester .243, so wasn't in the market at the time.

My 32 Special is a Marlin 336A. Love it. Good trigger, accurate, guessing the longer barrel doesn't hurt that any. quick google search, found several loads, different bullets, mostly using 3031, 4895 powders.
Surprised to see them so wimpy. velocities with 245-260 bullets were 15-1700 fps.
I would think you could get better velocity than that.

I think mine is a copper clad. Use silver maple a lot, easy to split, easy to start, quick to burn, so don't have long lasting embers or over heat. If winter and cold, can burn ash or oak or whatever. (box elder about same as silver maple too)
Corn cobs good to start fire with that is for sure.
