IF you end up with anything with a "shiny" finish on the stock....you might consider spending an evening giving it a light rubdown with a handful of 4/0 steel wool. Rub it just hard enough to knock off the gloss. I've done that with my Rem. 700 and it leaves a very nice flat satin-like fin...

Mine has had a Leupold straight 4x on it for 30 yrs without problems. Since I have other big-bores for the real "up-close and personal" hunting I've done, the .375 has been used for large, (non-dangerous) game where ranges over 50 yds. would be the norm.

Ashley Scout Mount, B & L 2x pistol scope on my 45/70 Guide Gun...
LOVE IT. When I put it on, I was hunting the Okeefennokee swamp region of Souh Georgia and "long" shots were 80-100 yds. MOST of the deer I killed were under 50. That combination worked GREAT..!!

What worked for me...

I had tried scoping a Thompson Contender...In that effort I acquired a 2x B & L pistol scope. HATED the scoped Contender. When I got my 45/70 Guide Gun, I bought the A/O "Scout Mount" for it, and put that B & L pistol scope on it. LOVE IT..!!
