As I recall, the "Uncle Henry's Golden Spike" was a pretty good blade from a user standpoint, and they looked good to. That's a nice looking sheath for it.

I don't know about the Viking in particular, but it sounds like a cam issue. Cracked, maybe just gummed up. With my wife's machines, I always start with a thorough cleaning.

For what it's worth, a 205gr in pure lead from a Lyman 427098, as cast/un-sized, worked for me in two old "oversize" '92 bores. Red Dot and Unique Cowboy loads shot pretty well in both. If the '73 checks out as sound, they may work for you. If the bore is rougher than it looks, you will do...

Water is back on! Steamed the line out, the freeze was about 40 feet from the barn, just under the edge of the access road. Had a nice day today, it almost touched 30 degrees, and the sun was warm. Moved some wood up to the house. More snow tonight they are saying, down to 10 right now.

I would think you would have enough snow on the ground to insulate any pipe reasonably buried for the climate of the region.
