Did a little reshaping on the stock and forearm today to get rid of the geometric shapes on the PG area, and forearm tip. Couldn't go much further, and not have it looked messed up, but it did improve the looks a lot. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v691/marlinguy/DSCF4951.jpg Took some off the bo...

Re: What to do with a new "old" gun as far as maintenance?
Every old gun I own got completely disassembled for cleaning and inspection when I first bought them. I make a habit of giving them a good internal cleaning, and lubricate the friction points. On the outside I'm very careful to not over clean an old gun, as I want to retain the gun's look, unless it...

Re: Old Marlin disassembly tips
The Marlin lever actions are so much simpler that you'll be amazed at how few parts are involved in them! I used to collect 1894 Winchesters, and got an 1893 Marlin takedown in a trade deal. Once I took it apart to see if it was OK inside, I quickly found a very simple action. I immediately sold off...

Re: Old Marlin disassembly tips
They pretty much disassemble like a new Marlin 1894, except for the flat mainspring. Once I remove the buttstock, I push down on the mainspring, and push it to the left, so the tension is relieved. Sometimes the mainspring screw might be too tight, so may have to go in at an angle to back it off sli...

The info you have on numbers for certain barrel lengths is what I would have at home. Sixcun, Do you mean quantity of production on 1881 Marlins? Or on that configuration? From what I've read the guesstimate is around 20,000 guns made in the model 1881. A 30" barrel is pretty rare, and surprising it has a 28" mag tube? Usually the mag tube matched the barrel length, except ...

Not a Winchester, but I owned an early 1895 Marlin takedown in .33 Winchester, and never had any accuracy issues with it. I loaded only smokeless powder, but with both cast lead and jacketed bullets. Both gave me very satisfactory accuracy.

Those are what a foundry would buy to melt down. They then could be used for cast aluminum parts, or go to a sheet mill to roll out into aluminum sheet of all gauges. Maybe even aluminum foil.
