A bunch of us were shooting Friday, and I saw a crescent butt stocked, engraved 1895 45-70. It looked sharp, and I asked about it. A few minutes later and lead is going downrange. It was a blast. This could be addictive. :mrgreen:

Here is a .45 Trapper at the cabin. Those burnt trees were from the Dobbins fire a few years ago, and are in the woodpile now. Mother Nature is growing new future firewood for us. Great Levers. I wish I had bought one years earlier. Factory ammo is cheaper, and (in our opinion) there is no recoil at all with the 125 through 158 gr loads - and only minor recoil with the heavy 180 gr loads. Much less than regular rifle rounds and 12 ga shotguns.

I remember reading about this conversion years ago. It would be kind of neat to have an old family 30-30 that had been shot enough to need it. You'd know you got your money's worth out of that rifle.

And a 38-55 is another one I'd like to get someday.

You're doing the right thing. Gave him a chance but sometimes a person has to hit rock bottom before they wakeup; this may actually be a favor in the long run. And you have your family & home - can't risk that for this.

When I made this choice, I went with a tuned Tanker Garand in .308. There are some shops that do Garand work, but my guy retired and I don't have experience with the rest. In our family, the kids and disabled adults have no problems putting rounds on target with the .357 Levers (and .30 Carbines). That means a lot. Fun question & no wrong anwsers really... I'm picking a 16" M92 in .44 Special. Loaded up or down, it will work for what I do or need done. And the stubby case is easier to load then the longer ones.
