They're comparable to the 1848/49. You might want to look at the Colt 1862, it's a 5 shot .36 with the Navy/SAA gripframe. There's two versions of it, one looks like a '51 Navy and the other looks like a little '60 Army. http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_92_187_189&products_...

I'm pretty sure Remington case hardened the receivers on Rolling Blocks which would explain your trouble with filing it. Looks like a really cool project. I look forward to seeing more.

Those should be fun builds and that looks like a grand design for kids, stable enough to stay out of trouble. Never built a kayak but I have considered it on occasion. Very cool! My dad and I built a bunch of boats when I was growing up ranging from a 7' Optimist pram to a 38' Bristol Channel Cutter (28' over the deck + 10' of bowsprit and boomkin). My inclination would be towards the 30-40 Krag, ideal small bore cast bullet cartridge. Certainly wouldn't fault anybody for a 38-55 though.
Sounds like a cool project, enjoy.

Re: Does anyone have a 38/357 Rossi 92 lever action that wil
I have an older stainless model 92 in 357. It mainly gets fed lyman 358429 (or the HP version) in 38 Special cases. It does feed the Thompson bullet and Lee 358-158-RF in magnum brass, 358429 is too long for magnum brass. The only jacketed bullet I've shot is the Remington 180 gr in magnum brass and...

I have the plain R1 but have added an ambi safety to it (south paw here). It's a great gun, especially considering the price. I've run about 4500 rounds through it (it doesn't get shot near as much as my Gold Cup). The first 50 were jacketed factory fodder and one of them jammed in the second mag. T...

I've shot a Hepburn a couple of times. It handles about like a Rolling Block but it is of course dependent on the length and weight of the barrel; with a light contour there is no reason it couldn't make a great hunting rifle. They definitely stand out in a crowd. I'd probably lean towards getting t...

I have one and really like it. When I first got it I cross referenced charge weights from 2.5 to 80 grs. with my RCBS beam scale and found no issues. Occasionally I'll still check it just to be sure but thus far no problems and it's quicker than waiting for a beam scale to balance out.

The black comes from your bore solvent (Hoppe's or whatever) reacting with the bronze or copper bore brush. If you take a perfectly clean bore and run a solvent soaked bronze brush through it the next patches will be black. I only use a brush (or chore boy) if I have leading to deal with.
