Re: Not Lever but need Winchester 1903 help
My landlord has one his father used in the 1st WW with the RFC, (the British government bought loads of them and millions of rounds of ammo for training), because it wasn't working right he took it to a local gunsmith who tried it with .22 LR and gave up, I told him it took different ammo and he sa...

Re: Not Lever but need Winchester 1903 help
Rube...that's an interesting gun.....I see parts (trigger and some internals) that were not supposed to be nickeled....not nickeled.....wood to metal fit is appropriate so,it's not as if someone took a beater and renickeled it. The rear barrel sight looks to be nickeled and that's what throws it of...

Not Lever but need Winchester 1903 help
First, please forgive me that this is not a lever. I just know you guys have lots of knowledge on other guns also so I thought I would ask. I recently aquired a Winchester Model 1903 that appears to have a nickel finish. The gun was made around 1919 with a serial number of 1023** The letterning and ...

Thanks for all the comments guys. I have been doing leather work for a little over a year. Still lots to learn but I have really taken to it and...

Excellent Rube. Very, very excellent. I had the pleasure of spending a day in the saddle on the J-S. Did you know the south fence of the corrals is the border fence? The cussed horse I had borrowed actually tore a post out of the shed where I tied him. Well, it made a memory. Thanks and goodness. I...

Thank you all. It was a fun project and one that I just kind of backed into. Started out with a facination of the original John Slaughter photo because his 1887 was so prominant. Then I just assumed that he had a canvas Mills style belt on. Thought that for years. In the Packing Iron book it is even...

Re: Fun Project 1800s Cartridge Belt Restoration
Great job of restoration, well done  those type of cartridge belts are often found in the UK usually made of spring steel. I have used them in the past but once carelessly scratched my stock on an empty shell holder. They are quick to use and hold the shells securely. Sometimes I see a row...

Re: Winchester 1887
I am pretty sure all the Winchester Model 1887 shotguns were pre-smokeless. The Winchester Model 1901 lever action shotgun was made for smokeless powder, but is only available in 10 guage. If you want 12 guage, you have to go with the Model 1887. That's my understanding anyway. By the way, the 1887...

Rube, that one looks really nice. Is it a 12 or a 10? I used to watch some of the boys do the SASS thing a dozen years ago, and one guy had an 87 in 10 gauge that he campaigned on the shotgun stage. He only loaded with black powder, and oh, my, what a wonderful boom when he lit it off. This one is ...
