It would be a good idea to compare the diameters of the 2 types of bullets you are using, and to slug the bore.

Re: .44 WCF crimping

Your sizing die is probably sizing the necks to .423'' or possibly even tighter for use with 44-40 bullets. You will have to measure the inside diameter of the necks. The xtp bullets are .430'', and will be more difficult to seat, and will show more of a pronounced bulge to the case neck, unless the...

Hmmm. 50+ patches and scrubbing to get down to copper. If you were removing black stuff, that was probably powder fouling. I wonder just how thick the fouling was.
Thinking out loud if the rifle barrel is a 44 cal thats been miss stamped and mis chambered?

I tried one of those tools once, but went back to my usual method of slitting a case neck lengthways and fitting the bullet in the neck, and chambering the round. After that , I recheck with a dummy round and make adjustments as required.

It looks like the bore is starting to clean up. Before I clean anymore, I would slug the bore and find out exactly what groove diameter I have.
If the bore is oversized or out of spec, let Henry deal with it.

A 12 twist will stabilize a bullet heavier than 55 grains. Group size wil probably be better with 50, 52 or 53 grain bullets though, and may be satisfactory with the 55 grainers. Go with 9 or 10 twist for heavier bullets.

Try cream of wheat on top of the powder charge. Adjust load accordingly. The wheat powder will make a seal around the bullet base and stop gas cutting. It works best when the case is nearly full.
