Re: 338-348 Ackley Improve
First off, I don't think you are going to find any data by Ackley as I don't think that the cartridge was an Ackley invention. More than likely it was an invention or alteration based on the 348AI. AS to why; like most wildcats, the reason is lost to history. Even if you did find Ackley info, that s...

If you do it, no matter in which rifle, have the reamer rental or manufacturer send the print and measurements so you can send that to the die company of your choice and confirm that the reamer and their dies will work together. Early on, there was only the AI and I still think that if you order 348...

Be careful which one you get; there are at least three versions of 348 Improved. The Ackley is a short neck with minimal (dang near none) case taper. I've seen long neck (same as the original case but blown out body), short neck with at least two different degrees of case taper. I would get drawings...

Re: Winchester conversion
I very much doubt that you can stuff any 348 based cased in a Big Bore. The 348 case was based off the 50 WCF and that big of a case just won't fit without a lot of hogging metal which would weaken the gun. The M71 will work in 416 but there are no readily available bullets that you would be able to...

I recall an article of a Siamese mauser (meant for rimmed) chambered for 348. They were often rebarreled for 45-70 so a 348 seems possible if not practical. Of course that is going to be a whole new barrel and not a ream job.

Re: 30-40 AI in an 1895
My foray into the AI was with the 348. Yes, it did make one heck of a thumper....on both ends. There are a couple of downsides regardless of the performance aspects. First, the sharper shoulder and less tampered body does not feed as well in a lever action. Second, the shorter neck limits the use of...
