Any shop that sells coins will gladly give you an estimate of their value for free. I wouldn't pay anyone to tell me the value. But I also wont usually sell to the shop giving the estimate. Some friends just sold her parent's collection at an auction, brought more than the appraiser expected. They had both paper and coinage.

Don't know what an appraiser costs but might be a good investment. Sometimes what doesn't look special to us is special to a collector.

My brother shoots it in his 14" Contender and really likes it. Back in the day in was one of the dominant cartridges in IHMSA until everyone got so recoil sensitive and cobbled together all those magic 7s. I shot, and still do, .30-30 in mine but was always impressed with the .30 Herrett.

I have never done a chamber cast on any of mine, but that newer one seems to resemble the one in my 14" Contender. Fired cases interchange between that, my Remington 788, and my '74 Model 94. My Savage 325 will chamber those gun's cases, but it's fired cases won't begin to go in the others.

I used that Mark Twain quote around two of my boys (aged 35 and 41) and they thought I was the smartest guy on the planet. Then I explained how poorly their educations were serving them. I remember learning that quote in early high school. Funny how some things stick with you.

Agree on the .30 Carbine, it would be a perfect companion to my Blackhawk. Not sure if it's allowed in Pistol Cartridge Silhouette, but if it was it would be a good choice.

My youngest brother had one in .256 but unfortunately I didn't have the money to keep it in the family when he sold it.
