Re: Anyone Else Use Reduced Loads For Hunting "not so big" game?

I use to in my 30/30. 110grn Speer HP and a sniff of 231 was good for rabbits n' squirls. I have drove the same bullet out of the 308 with h4227 that was plenty for fox to 150yds. I use to use 4227 and 60grn 243 loads for shooting rabbits to 200yds many moons ago. Our small woodland Roe deer don't n...

I had that smooth bore version, I think it was called the "Buffalo Hunter" it was a reliable shooter and it had a musket size nipple which if fired with a heavy charge would put the hammer back on half cock. :o I used 70 to 90 Grs with up to 1oz of shot. Killed a few rabbits and pigeons w...

The only way that may work is with a good filler and a small charge not that much more than a 410 level of h110 but what for when there are much better options!

Then again, what do I know!!

Hodgdon's web site has a page of Pyrodex loads for cartridges, and a page for 777 loads for cartridges. I think a 200 grain .44 mag needs 30 grains of Pyrodex, but I don't have it before me. The rust will occure easier than from BP yes but in it's defense not a deep rust if treated again quickly. Send a smokeless round down when your done, that'll get rid of the bulk of soot. I love using pyro in my 12g. A couple of damp patches through first to remove most of the deposits. In that 44 a...
